Squealing YRV Brakes

Forum:

Hi guys, I recently changed the front discs and pads on my 51 reg YRV 4-Trak and now whenever I brake at low speeds I hear a horrible squealing sounds coming from both wheels, but more so from the left side.

Any ideas on this issue??

Thanks

Matt

Squealing YRV Brakes

hi matt

couple of questions

1 did you clean the new discs with meths or something else before renewing them as they are covered with a lightoil on purchase to stop surface rust appearing

2 did you lighty smear the back of the pads with some sort of copper grease to collect the dust prior to fitting

3 after fitting did you bleed the fronnt brakes and allow a bit of brake fluid to contaminate the discs or pads

any of these will cause squeal as will a load of other things i always give 200 miles before a set of pads and discs are really worn in enough to get the job done

good luck

YRV Brake Squeal

Like antraxx69 said, its most likely be number 2.
Make sure you copper grease or similar brake compound ANY part of the calliper that touches the pad.
Always smear on the piston rim or if you still have yours, both faces of the round ANTI SQUEAL SHIM that clips into the piston.
Also grease both sides of the outer shim that sits between calliper and pad.
Recently told EBC pads on the Turbo are a little bit thicker and will rub the disc unless you remove the Anti squeal shim or about 1mm off the friction material surface.
Although a different pad it may be the same problem with other YRV's and EBC pads??
Discs should always be cleaned with Meths, IPA Alcohol or brake/carb cleaner.
Regards,
Dave.

Hi guys, thanks for the

Hi guys, thanks for the quick replies. I cleaned the discs with turps before fitting as per the instructions on the box, but I didn't apply any copper grease to any part. Didn't attempt to bleed the brakes, as, as my dad always states 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it 'til it is!' Should I apply copper grease to the backs of the pads etc, or just put up with the squeal?

Thanks

Matt

Squealing YRV Brakes

hi matt

as youve cleaned the discs my best guess is the left over or new brake dust from the pads give them a good spray with brake cleaner and if the run of fluid is black it will be brake dust.

as a rule i always grease the back of the pads and pistons edges along with the auto adjusters with a bit of copper grease as to bleeding normally i would as pushing the piston back in CAN cause air to be trapped behind it

remember to add a bit of silcone grease to the bleed nipples base to stop air leakage past the threads if using a power/vacuum bleeder

once done spin the wheels to hear any rubbing with the discs and then check that one of the wheels isnt being dragged by the other and that the brakes are balanced correctly not pulling under load

good luck

YRV Brakes

You always got to grease the pad backs, if it does not squeal right away, it will eventualy!!
I would avoid Turps? Best with what i mentioned previously, it evaporates quickly with no residue.
Good luck!
Dave.

Sorted

Hi guys, thanks for all the help and advice. Took the car to STS today to get it looked at, and the pads just needed greasing. Something to remember for next time eh BlushUnknw One thing though. STS also pulled my rear drums apart and gave them a serious clean up. They stated that it hadn't been done in a while. I had the car serviced a Christmas time last year, when it was due for an MOT. Weren't Daihatsu meant to clean the rear drums up at this service?

Thanks for everything,

Matt
