Forum:
Hi guys.... i've just bought home a 1988 daihatsu rocky with the 3y 2Ltr petrol motor in it. it has manual locking hubs.
it goes into low range ok but the front wheels don't get driven by the transfer case. i have listened when you press the 4x4 button or engage low range and can hear the relay switching but whatever it's supposed to be supplying power to isn't doing anything. when i lock the hubs, the front prop shaft won't spin with the wheels on the ground meaning that the hubs are locking ok.
however when the hubs are unlocked and the wheels are still on the ground, if i have the car in 4x4 mode, the prop shaft shouldn't spin still as it should be connected through to the rear prop shaft which obviously won't spin as the wheels are on the ground.
can anyone help me with what may be wrong and why the front prop shaft isn't being engaged? also, what are the 2 sensor looking things on the transfer case? one on top and one at the back near a vacuum line? the one at the back has no wires on it, i found some stray wires and soldered them on but didn't change anything... what are they for?
VSV
hey guys i went to the warfs website and got some good info.
from looking through the manual, it seems like maybe my VSV solenoids aren't functioning. would it be worth while just setting up a 3 way ballvalve in the cabin which comes off manifold vaccuum and then operating the opposing chambers in transfer case that way or should i just replace the solenoids.
i guess i'm asking this question thinking that the solenoids may be an expensive part?
thanks

vaccuum
Ok so i hooked up a vaccuum line from inlet manifold to the transfer case vaccuum chamber today and bingo, it went straight into 4wd mode. so now i know that it's definitely the vaccuum solenoids that are causing me the problems with 4wd not engaging.
i've rung a daihatsu dealer for pricing on new parts and to get them here in sydney is going to cost me $200 (AUD) and will take at least 3 weeks from japan.
So i decided i would type up here what i'm going to do to fix this problem so that everyone else that is having this problem can read this and know how to fix there's as it's obvious this is a common problem.
So here's one way of bypassing this daihatsu system. Go to pirtek and buy a 3 way 'L port' 1/4" ball valve. Also while you are there at pirtek, but 3 brass 3/16" hose barbs to screw into your 1/4" 3 way ball valve. if you are in australia, the part number for the ball valve is R5710-04 and for the brass barbs, Z06003-0504. The ball valve is a nice neat ball valve with a compact handle and also has mounts on it to mount the ball valve in your dash or under car wherever you want it.
find any hose in your engine bay that has constant vaccuum and put a T-piece into it (also available fro pirtek). from the spare barb on that t piece, run vaccuum hose to the supply port of the 3 way ball valve which you have mounted somewhere i or on the car.
Then simply one hose to each vaccuum chamber on your transfer case and when you turn the ball valve one way, it will engage 4wd and when you turn it the other way, it will disengage 4wd. the 4 wd light in your dash will still operate exactly the same as the sensors on the vaccuum chambers have not been touched in this modification.
You now do not have to worry about wires corroding or getting ripped off the solenoids and losing your abilty to use 4wd mode.
