Wanted - propshafts for a 4 speed F20 or F50

Forum:

If anyone has a pair of these propshafts lying around then please let me know. I am going to swap my 5 speed gear box for a 4 speed, so need the shorter front prop and longer rear prop to suit.

Thanks - Alastair.

Propshafts for a 4 speed F50

I believe I have the 4 speed propshafts in my garage from I took out a 4 speed box and put a 5 speed in.

Whereabouts are you? Also will you be using the 5 speed box you are going to take out?

Prop shafts

Many thanks for the reply, but I have already found some. I may still be interested as the two I bought seem to be two rears! I am in Bridgend (not far from Cardiff) by the way. I am taking out a five speed box with a knackered second gear from the well documented loose nut problem, and replacing it with one of the spare four speeds I've got which both seem to be less worn and are apparently much stronger. How much would you want for them? The last pair I bought cost £15 to post by parcel force once wrapped in cardboard and taped up.

Let me know

Regards - Alastair.

Propshafts for a 4 speed F50

Alastair,

Firstly I am sorry to be late getting back to you. Work and a bad memory are the influencing factors here.

Right a few things, firstly the five speed box should be as good as the 4 speed. It is the exactly the same box with an extra (5th) gear added on the end ........so they should be as robust as each other.

Secondly I am and talking here from an F50 perspective. I have just come out of the garage.........and what do I see.....two rear propshafts.........I thought that is strange...but then I realised that (i) the 5 speed is a longer gearbox and (ii) I think it sits differently. It has a longer shaft to the front and a shorter to the rear.

So I can send you these propshafts on the basis of postage cost only if you like BUT I think you already have what you need. I think the longer front propshaft stays in and you only change the rear propshaft for the longer rear unit which you already have by the sound of it. If that does not work and both propshafts have to be changed then equidistant shafts (the ones you have) are probably what is required.

So let me know if you want to me to send these propshafts anyway and, if it is an F50 you are running let me know if you are interested in selling your knackered 5 speed box.

Prop Swap

Hello, many thanks for the reply. You are right, I may have what I need already. I was suprised that the front shaft from the 4 speed was the same diameter as the rear one, on my F20 which is a 5 speed, the front prop is a smaller diameter although this may be just to get clearance above the gearbox cross member since the transfer box is about 10cm further back.

I will keep your details and be in contact if I need to take you up on your offer.

As for the existing 5 speed box, second gear synchro is completely worn making changing down fron 3rd to 2nd almost impossible without some serious de-clutching. I may yet try to swap the damaged parts in this 5 speed box with some from a spare 4 speed if the synchro hubs etc are the same. There is only one way to find out ...

Watch this space.

Regards - Alastair.
