Gearbox problems

Forum:

I have a 1989 rocky, which started giving me problems with going from 3rd to 2nd. My local garage said it was synchro problems, even though I thought it was not. I had a look at the posts on this site regarding gearboxes, and found many relating to the infamous 'loose nut'. I spoke to the garage, and he agreed to check this out for me. It was the loose nut problem, a simple fix for a mechanic, and saved my a lot of money, in not having to replace the gearbox. This is a great site for owners, and I would like to thank all the contributers who posted the loose nut details.

Gearbox problem

I too have a Feroza (Rocky) an recently had a problem with shifting to rear gear (R). Along it I had rattles and few people I talk to told me about some peace in the gearbox which tends to brake down with following consequenses. When further looking into the problem it apeared the gearbox is also wearing down. As it stands now I am looking for a new (used) gearbox. The dealer tells me I can used the newer gearboxes so thats a comfort. But it, and the repair, is going to cost me a lot, somwere like 350 pounds.

vitara gear change problem

I recently bought a R-reg vitara. I took it for a test drive and all ok. 3 days later and the gearstick came out of its socket, i was able to relocate it with no trouble. However, a the next day it happened again and i couldn't relocate it without tearing the rubber seal to see how to do it.The stick came out because a spring holding the gearstick retainer fitting in place had snapped. In the process i lost a nylon bush located between the ball on the stick and its socket. There was much clunking, clicking and grinding of something whilst trying to limp home.I have just replaced this nylon bush and now it wont go in 1st or 2nd gear at all.3rd,4th,5th and reverse are fine. What the hell has gone wrong? i am pulling my teeth out in wonderment.Anyone help????

vitara gearbox

Odd a friend of mine had the same thing happen and did the same as you have to get home. We replaced all the bit including the gear stick and it worked but was a bit liike stirring a pudding basin so obviously the synchro had suffered during his journey back. You may well find that you have damaged the synchro on 1st and 2nd only, lucky he'd done the lot.

Not much help I'm afraid
