Farm / Hi-Lift jacks

Forum:

Just brought a Farm Jack from screwfix and went out to play with it on my sporty as I had to swap my muds for road tyres, only I cant seem to find a suitble jacking location, anyone got one and where do you jack it?

bent metal

Not many places really, easy to bend metal on these things with one of them,On me fourtrak i made a thick rear bumper with shackles so i could jack up the back, and i can jack up the front where the end chassis stubs are, thats about it i have got rock sliders which might take the strain but not to keen on using em alot for that. Your sidesteps might be ok as the sportrack is lighter, whenever i change my tyres i still use a trolley jack on level ground cos its alot safer, you can soon get into trouble with an unsturdy high lift.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Jack Jack, Where Do I Jack

Many people I encounter have the same problem, what I usually do is replace the front and rear bumpers with 6"X3" (150X75mm) channel, manufacture heavier mounting brackets and install straight onto the chassis.

On the side of the vehicle, fabricate rock sliders from substantial tube, manufacture mounting points and weld to the chassis, install the rock sliders, use substantial brackets, and 12mm bolts.

Be aware of using Hi Lift jacks, particularly on poor, or uneven ground, seen too many injuries over the years, even to experienced users of these damn things.

One suggestion I would make, is the use of an air jack, these are a large air bag, the pipe is fitted over the exhaust and the engine started, the exhaust gases inflate the bag to lift the vehicle. Having such a large footprint, they are suitable for all types of ground conditions with the exception of those with spikes, as these may burst the bag. acountering this problem is easy, carry a piece of plywood larger than the footprint, stand the jack onto the wood before inflating.
Air jack's require no skill in use, are far safer than Hi Lift jacks, and allow a vehicle to be lifted without a lot of work.

HI Lift

Great for the old Series Landrovers and probably the leter models where the chassis and bumbers are one of the same but the Sporty is not really suitable without modification to strengthen the pressed steel bumpers.

Either an air lift or I always use a good hi-lift trolly jack

Ok cheers I thought I would

Ok cheers

I thought I would be usefull until I tried to use it.

I would consider doing a bumper mod as the standard ones are rubish.

I'll raid the store room at work and see what I can make.

Hi Jack

Have you got the accessories for your jack; if so you can use it for pulling, particularly stuck vehicles. If not, most manufacturers have a kit to allow them to be used to pull.

Not yet. I did see on the

Not yet.

I did see on the Hi-Lift website all kinds of attachments and accessories.

I was quite interested in the wheel straps for jacking, as there are not many safe jack points on a sporty.

The brand I bought was Hilka, I dont think they do any accessories, or at least they dont list any on their website.

Hi Jacked

Many other manufacturers will supply accessories, most of these should fit your jack, look at these at a local supplier to ensure they will be usable with your jack.

Hi Lift

Companies such as Machine Mart do hi lift jacks, it may pay to look in their catalogue, or on their website to see if they do accessories suitable for use with your jack.

Hi lift jacks can be a useful asset when off roading, they can pull and spread, great if you need only a short pull when you get stuck.

Thought I would mention this as the fuel saved can be put to better use, SERIOUS OFF ROADING.
