Forum:
Hi i have a grinding noise coming from my wheel on further inspection i see that my lower part of my brake pad is rubbing on my brake disc, the top of the brake disc looks fine and has room to let the brake disc move freeley but the bottom end is touching and grinding. Has anyone got any ideas on how to sort this problem?. I drive a daihatsu yrv this would be a great help thanks
grinding on brake discs
Replace the pads and free the sticking caliper I would guess that the caliper is a two piston type and the bottom one is stuck
rubbing pads
new at the car maintance game!! there are 2 bolts behind the caliper one at the top and one at the bottom do i release them bolts to open the caliper and when i do will the ram come out and any tips on pushing it back in to get the pads back on? thanks
YRV Brakes
Hi,
the callipers are a single piston.
To get the calliper off, undo the bolts and put your knee against the disc and with both hands pull the calliper towards you.
This should squeeze the piston back in the housing, should lift up easier.
Carefull you dont pull it off the jack!
You might find loosening the brake fluid tank cap to allow the fluid to rise.
Make sure there is room in the tank or it will overspill.
Dont keep the cap open to the air long, it will absorb moisture and ruin your fluid and braking!
I would guess its the inner pad thats making the noise, they wear slightly quicker than the outer. Bet the inner side of the disc is badly scored too?
You may have to get new discs and pads.
Let us know how you get on.
Dave.

YRV brakes
Hi,
you mentioned in your other post that the brake pads are new.
Have the anti squeal shims been copper greased and put back in?
They are thin metal plates that sit between the back of the pad and the calliper piston.
Also mechanics often forget to grease and/or use the correct type to lubricate the sliders.
Silicon grease is best, withstands the heat better, never use copper here, it dries like gum.
The sliders are the 2 tubes that run through the calliper and what the fixing bolts enter.
The bolts or insides sometimes get greased instead of the outside of the sliders.
If a slider seizes it can cause the calliper to press on only in one spot.
Two seized sliders can cause just the piston to press on the inside pad only, causing wear and heat damage to the inside disc surface.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

fixed grinding noise
thanks for all your help well i tried to change the brake pads my self at home but i could not get one of the bolts off form the calliper the bottom one, so i had to call out a macanic he could not get it off either, so i had to take it down to his garage the he torched it off he said there was no grease on the bolt plus the fact the brake was partly ceased on and had to weld a nut on the end for a quick fix till i get a new bolt because it rounded off. The rear brake pad was badly worn the front one looked ok my brake discs are badly pitted at the rear because of this. i bought new brake pads for 16 pound these were not a perfect fit he had to grind a few milimeters off to make them fit the calliper. I have not got my brake discs yet been quoted 30 pound each from my local car shop!!think i can get them cheaper! anyway the grinding has gone but im still going to change the discs when i get some thanks again
Grinding Disks
Hi,
I've just bought my first YRV, got to say that it's a great car for the money (51 plate 1.3 Premium and i paid £2250).
Only issues are that the brakes are doing exactly the same as yours sound like they are doing (NSF seems to squeel under usual braking but occassionally makes an very loud grinding/groaning noise. Going to take it to my local friendly brake specialist tomorrow so i'll let you know the verdict. First impression is that it's a sticking calliper and (in anticipation) i've ordered a set of pads and disks from various online sources - the disks being an absolute bargain at £20 for the pair, brand new but surplus stock (tatty boxes)from a company on eBay. Pads i've paid about £35 for a set. So this isn't going to be a costly repair.
The big question i have for all the experts out there is:
I bought the car on 28.08.07 and it had passed a new MOT that day. The tracking is noticably out (typical of a small car having been bumped up a couple of curbs) and there is this issue with the brakes. Should this have passed an MOT in this condition (it's been issued with a new style MOT cert so presumable this must have been done officially as it's registered on the DVLA computer)?
The wife & the kids or my car? An unpleasant dilema but having given it some thought, i'll miss the kids!
