Forum:
Hi,
I have a 1976 F10.I am having trouble getting a gasket kit here for it..due to the fact that the spare parts people want to supply parts for a toyota motor.
on the block there is the letters FE is that what the motor is?
How hard is it to convert these to the toyota motor..12r or 2r ..i think thats the right motor..any advice would be appreciated.
thanks
F10
I am sure there are more qualified people here in the forum, but to my understanding Daihatsu and Toyota are kinda linked and the toyota blizzard is a re-badged F20 I have been told that the engine is actaully a toyota engine and most people think its an early camry motor, though recently I was told the numbers don't tally and you need to be looking at the early HIAC Van engine, its not much to go on but I hope that gives you a starting point?
I have just purchased an original Owners repair manual of ebay so when that finally arrives I will take a scan through and see if it has anymore details for you.

Toyota own a controlling
Toyota own a controlling interest in Daihatsu, they purchased this as they were competitors, the Blizzard is actually a mark 1 Fourtrak, not an F20, and it was sold in limited markets where Daihatsu did not sell.
Interestingly, Bertone, the famous car designers purchased the Mk1 Fourtrak, and remodelled the front panel, they installed a 1990cc BMW engine and sold it in Italy as the freeclimber. All the rest of the vehicle was pure Daihatsu Fourtrak/Rocky.
Mark 2 freeclimbers also had a remodelled front panel and the BMW engine installed, although this was the sportrak, and not the Fourtrak.
Some more useless information on how car manufacturers have always badge engineered cars.
I would not be suprised if
I would not be suprised if it was a Toyota engine, the engine in the F20 certainly is a Toyota unit as AusF20 says. If you don't have any luck here can I suggest a post on the following forum may help.

The site is mainly Dutch and Belgian but questions in English are fine, there are quite a lot of guys on there that run the older Daihatsu's like the F10 and F20 and I have found them helpful when I have posted.

engines
The engine fitted to your F10 is a 958cc Toyota Publica unit, they were in production from late 1974-1985, and produced 45hp.
From 1976 the F20 was in production, this was fitted with the Toyota 12R engine, this was fitted in the Toyota Hi-ace van, and the early Hi-lux 4X4.
Would suggest you try the classic car suppliers for a head gasket, others can be made or matched from existing models.
Do not confuse the Toyota
Do not confuse the Toyota 1587cc unit with other Toyota 1588cc units, on paper they appear the same, but are totally different units.
Putting in a 12R engine is relatively easy, you will need the matching gearbox, transfer case, axles, and require some rewiring. As yours is now a rare model, I would suggest repairing the engine and keeping it standard; and purchase a Fourtrak for playing.
My F20 is a 1979 model, it came with virtually no floor, or back end, the remains did not even fill a builders bucket, it is now re-built, all by hand, and every panel had to be painstakingly made by me.
She is an excellent runner, and the 12R engine is an extremely durable and reliable unit, which matches the vehicle well.
