Fourtrax Tires

Forum:

I need some help please!
Just brought an old G-reg Fourtrax which is cheap and cheerfull, (but have been told she would probable still pull a train out of a ditch) its got 5 bad and different size/makes of tires.
What is the best size for the old girl and any suggestions on a make and model for general use, occasional light off road and mainly road use to take into account wet/icy conditions.
not concerned with high speed rating as ill only plod about.
I would be greatful for any suggestions. Digger.

Hello, over the last couple of years ive tried lots of different wheels, ive used toyo open country treads on 215/80 r15 - good on and off road but seemed to wear a bit to easy for my liking, pirelli scorpion st on 215/80 r15 great for road, but youll get stuck in a cowpat, norseman armstrong at on 235/75 r15 - ok but wear easy, marshall powergaurd/venture AT on 235/75 r15 a good tyre but getting towards the price of a BFGoodridge AT which if you are prepared to spend about £100 is well worth the money, i know someone who has done 70,000 miles on the bf goodridge AT, been through three shoguns, but moved the tyres each time he bought and sold. Also got 215/80 r15 greenway machos which are an incredible tyre for off roading but you dont want to keep using them on tarmac they will wear.im currently getting a collection of 31 -10.5 r15 which is the biggest i will go with cos of bearings etc on axles, if i was you i would get some decent priced allterrains then you decide if you want really chunky look or not quite so chunky, i would go for 235 or above, but be warned if you do its worth getting offset alloys rather than standard fourtrak steel rims - there useless for big tyres, rub a dub dub on the springs, hope this helps Smile

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

hi, was just reading your post and was wondering how i can tell if my wheels are offset alloys or not. cheers stevo

alloy

Ello, well i think most of the alloys you can get on these trucks are off set in some way, basically you just measure the distance from where they bolt onto the axle and the edge of the rim, if you then look at the standard rims youll see just how much difference there is, its only on the front with the steering that you always get these basic rubbing problems Smile

Tyred

The best option is to go for 235/75/15, these will retain the same rolling radius (speedo will be correct).

Good Year Wrangler will be a good bet for predoninantly road use and still give good traction off road, and on ice. These will probably cost more than you paid for the vehicle, but will work out cost effective as they do phenominal mileage, had 90,000 out of a set.

Cooper do another good tyre, these are significantly cheaper than Good Year, but do similar mileage.

Cooper tyre information can be found on the Sinton tyres website, these would be my preferred choice, select carefully, and purchase a set of all terrains with a bias of 90% road use-10% off road for best longevity.

Fourtrax tyre's

Thank's all for the advise, very much appriciated. sounds like a might need a bank loan, but i think its worth it!
Digger.

Tyred Out

Forget not one thing, the cost of tyres becomes irrelevant, with a Fourtrak, as long as the flywheel is turning, and the engine has fuel it will keep going.
One local G reg has been worked hard on a local farm, it is serviced regularly, now done 450,000 miles, this includes towing stuck tractors, combines, and regularly tows in excess of 10 tonne loads (off road) and tows its legal 3 1/2 tonnes virtually daily.
This vehicle has more rust than metal on it, it is held together with cow dung, it has to be jet washed as often inside, as out, but still she keeps going.
They decided to retire her last year, and bought an Isuzu Trooper, a trooper it aint, it is on its third engine in less than a year, gets stuck at a sniff of off road work. Being fed up with this unreliability they bought the old girl out of retirement, she still gives sterling service.
