Servicing Advice

Forum:

Hi,
have recently accquired a 93 Sportrack ELXi (efi)with 116k which has about 70% service history. It needs brake discs replacing and I want to do the timing belt asap.
Seems sensible to me to do a full top to bottom belts and braces job as we intend to keep the car for a long time.
I presume that the diffs need the oils done, what oil is best for them?
Likewise, whats the best advice with gearbox and transfer box lubricants?
Im looking to change all fluids, oil, air and fuel filters, plugs, brakes front and rear plus fluid, anything else I should be looking at?
I also noticed that the rear offside shocker is leaking, what are the best replacements for these? Do you have to stick with original parts to retain the adjustable suspension set up?
Once Ive got a level playing field so to speak what are the service intervals on the sportrack?
Wow, lots of questions here I know, but any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Tony

Hi Tony

I'm a 4track owner...so I dont know a great deal about the Sporty..however being a long tome Daihatsu driver I thought I would give you my tuppence worth m8.

If you intend keeping the vehicle for a long time I would strongly recommend you aquire the full service manual on cd rom (you can purchase it from Lurch who runs this website..think its about £10...you get an aweful lot of useful information for your tenner including all recommended lubricants, service intervals etc..well worth it)

As far as the leaking shock is concerned I can advise you there cos 4tracks have the same set up. The damper system employed in both vehicles is in my opinion no more than a gimmick and pretty useless..it dont do much. You can safely replace adjusable shocks for 'normal' ones..a hell of a lot cheaper too. The redundant wiring can simply be taped up and cabled tied to the chassis somewhere..thats what I did anyway with absolutley no desernable difference whatsoever..just my opinion..others may differ.
When changing diff oils I use the standard stuff you can get from Halfords..cant remember offhand the spec...but its there on the shelf for about £6.

Brake disc replacement...easy diy job really...as long as you take your time and work methodically..I did the 4trak discs in about 2 hrs...cost me the price of the discs (which can be got from Millners...their web addy can be found on this site under parts dealers)I changed the front bearings at the same time..seemed sensible to me since I had the hubs stripped down to do discs.
The manual I mentioned takes you through the complete process step by step..piece of cake.
Hope some of this helps.

No problem diy. I have inspection pit in my garage so servicing/repairs diy is even easier. Just get a w/s manual on CD and its relatively easy. The cam belt is a bit tricky. I removed bumper, grill, fan and radiator to get better access/allignment to the belt. I couldnt find the cam timing marks on my engine. Managed to do the job by setting number one cylinder to tdc and counting the old belt ribs between the cogs! Get cam belt from your local motorshop rather than main dealer.

NB..Tip ...rear brakes must be fully slackened off to remove the drums.
