Sportrak - front diff causing problems

Forum:

Hi all,

I recently replaced the front diff on my Sporty because i got a bit carried away on the last off-roading event.

I have successfully replaced it and bolted everything back together, but i have a new problem:

Say im driving along at about 10mph in 4wd, and then put the clutch down, it is almost as if i have the brake on slightly as the car slows me down, instead of just rolling to a stop. Not sure why this is happening, but it only occurs in 4wd and since i have replaced the front diff.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

New Diff

Being in 4wd and turning the front diff instead of free wheeling will slow you down. It depends on the severity of the slowing as to whether there is a problem or not in the diff/half shafts.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I think it must be more than that. It feels as if you are still in gear but have taken your foot of the accelerator, if you know what i mean. You can feel that you are being pushed forward slightly.

I probably would have noticed it before i broke it if it were normal behaviour.

Thanks for your reply, any more suggestions please throw them at me.

stiff diff

I would have said the same as Oldminiman, as the front hubs are engaged in 4wd they spin the front diff causing resistance.

Does it make any differecne coasting in neutral instead of in gear with clutch down?
Also is there any change between 4h and 4l?

Sticky stuff

Most likely items have been covered, another option is the bearings, or the brakes binding.
If you have fitted the complete axle, check the brakes are not binding slightly, or that you have trapped a flexible brake hose, check the steel brake pipes for and damage, i.e. crushing, and ensure fluid flows freely (no dirt in the lines) through the system.
Check the bearings for play, and correct adjustment, if the axle has been standing, it is possible that the bearings have either started to seize, or have corrosion on them which would give a similar feeling.
