Fourtrak clutch release arm return spring

Forum:

F78 - rattle from clutch release form / bearing when clutch is released. I'm wondering if there should be some sort of return spring to pull the release bearing away from the pressure plate fingers when the clutch pedal is released. Mine doesn't have one, with the result that the release arm / bearing intermittently rattles like mad, both at idle and when driving. The noise disappears when the arm is moved either into the pressure plate (i.e. take up pedal free play, no need to depress fully) or away from it (i.e. release spring). Clutch free play is set correctly. F75 manual, page CL-6 shows a 'tension spring' which pulls the release fork / release bearing assembly away from the pressure plate fingers. This is also shown on page CL-2. Admittedly the F78 is a different model so Daihatsu may have dropped this spring at some point. There appears to be a recess in the release arm where such a spring would locate, though I can't see any obvious place it would attach to the gearbox casing. I've used a bungee cord to act as a release spring for now and the noise is gone. Does anyone know if this spring should be present on Foutrak models? Anyone else had similar rattle problems?

return spring

Hi i have an f75 and it has no return spring i also had the same problem and changed the pressure plate problem solved my manual also shows a spring.

a missing spring???

Hey guys you should have cluth release springs on the fork lever to prevent movement , vibration and wear, they can go missing cos after all they are only an externall spring and can go ping with wear and off roading (branches etc can catch them) i bet you can easily find replacements on plenty off secondhand boxes around as they are all the same gearbox type i believe.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Spring is in the air

Simple answer, depends upon the model, some models have a return spring, others do not. It is not necessary to have the spring fitted, as Daihatsu stopped fitting them, this was to allow the bearing to remain in slight contact with the pressure plate to prevent the horrible noise which occurs when the thrust bearing starts to wear.

Return spring price

The return springs are available and cost £6.20 from Daihatsu
I have one and could post it

Clutch Rattle

I replaced the clutch on my Sportrak nearly 6years ago and was a bit concerned abot the flimsy securing spring on the thrust bearing. Since this I have had a similar rattle at the top of the pedal travel as the bearing is engaged. I thought of stripping it all out again but now with over 40000 miles added the noise hasn't worsened and the cluth is a strong as ever. I have put it down, correctly or not, to this flimsy spring clip retaining the thrust bearing which I have to admit seemed incapable of the job.
