unusual starting problem?

Forum:

had problems that were like air ingress in to the fuel, but turned out to be some fuel debris(like the fuel had started to become like gelatine) had managed to get in to the fuel pump and was blocking the, forgive the non-mechanical term, pressure release bolt on the side of the fuel pump. that i imagine carrys fuel back to the tank. seem to have that problem under control after unblocking the bolt after problmes start, and running some clean deisel with additive in.

now this seems to have triggered a starting problem whether from cold or warm, engine turns over loads and only just manages to start as the battery is losing power (also think my batery may be in the process of dying). dont think its heater plugs as even if the engine is warm samne problem.
any ideas??

its a '97 fourtrak 2.8 TDL, with inported engine by the way

Wax sugar flour ........

Sounds like the fuel has waxed. It a problem in oil wells! Any chance someone has doctored the fuel tank with sugar etc? Perhaps you bought fuel from a unreliable pump.
I think you will need to drain the tank, flush all the pipes and renew the fuel filter. Syphone the fuel tank and look to see whats comes out.
Final thought ... have you recently purchased the car from a 'chip fat' bio diesel user?

fuel tank drained, pipes

fuel tank drained, pipes cleared, new filter. and had the car for 2 1/2 years.
problem started as i was driving it (well parked on an incline with the engine running) and was running fine before. had 1/3 of a tank of fuel in at the time aswell.
thanks for the input

Unusual problems

Here are some of the more unusual problems i have encountered:

1/ is the metal fuel pick up pipe inside the fuel tank corroded or perforated near the upper end of the pipe, this will allow a proportion of air into the fuel system.

2/ is the filter on the end of the fuel pipe damaged, blocked or broken, this would block the pipe when it is sucking up fuel by acting like a hinge.

3/ is the fuel tank breather blocked, start and run the engine with the fuel filler cap removed to allow the tank to breathe.

4/ is there an internal problem with the fuel pump, such as an internal leak caused by your previous problem.

5/ is the non return valve in the fuel filter damaged (not unusual on Fourtrak's) and restricting fuel flow. Would suggest you connect up a temporary fuel supply directly to the fuel pump and see if the engine runs correctly.

Best of luck, as unusual problems can be akin to finding a needle in a haystack.

1. fuel pick up pipe was

1. fuel pick up pipe was corroded and has been replaced in the grand scheme of trying to source the problem.
2. filter on the pipe is fine (so i am told as i did not check that myself)
3. removing the filler cap doesnt make a difference to the starting, and once started the running isnt a problem
4. the running problem is (as far as i can diagnose) stemming from the pump, and a leak could be a posdsible cause but, as the running isn't greatly afftect once started does that rule it out??
5. had a new filter fitted which i would assume rules that problems out.

Sounds though it it an

Sounds though it it an internal problem with the engine, the most obvious is low compression, this can be due to a camshaft problem, valve clearance problem, poor valve condition, or general bore/piston ring wear.

Suggest you remove the glow plugs and compression test the engine.
