Stick in the mud
Hydraulic winches specifically for the Fourtrak use the transfer case for their pump, on the rear of the transfer case is an aluminium cover plate shaped something like a bra. This is removed and the pump is simply bolted on in place of the cover, the tank can be placed anywhere within easy range of the pump, but, the oil level should be higher than the pump too prime it.
Aftermarket winches use the power steering pump, the pressure pipe is tee'd into the pressure outlet of the power steering pump, this gives the feed.
Both systems feed a set of valves to control the direction of the winch, simple types use a handle to control the valve directly, other systems rely upon remote solenoids to control the valve.
Both systems have their benefits, but the steering pump type often provide the pressure, but not the flow capacity to operate the winch at its optimum, therefore it will be slower, and not have as much pulling power as it was designed for. Look at the winch manufacturers specifications, this will give a pressure, and flow requirement for the winch to operate correctly. Hydraulic winches are the better system as they give a constant pull, and you do not have to keep stopping to let the motor cool down, and give the battery time to recharge. The only disadvantage is that the engine needs to run to operate the pump.
hydraulic winch
thanks a lot for the help.
I will remove the aluminum cover plate of my transfer today to find if it is possible to construct a machined base (very familiar with metal constructions...) to attach a universal hydraulic pump with the right specifications because it is just impossible to find in Greece a hydraulic pump specifically for the Fourtrak (if someone knows where to find one i am interested a lot...) I am thinking also to remove the electric motor of a 10000 lbs electric winch i already have and attach in its place (with another machined base...) a universal hydraulic one of the right specs (power, flow, revs). The fourtrack have a lot of space in the engine compartment to attach the oil tank. I already bought a used solenoid control valve and i will also put a flow regulator in the oil line to control the speed of the winch... i will keep you informed...
thanks again

PS. does anyone want pictures and details for the modification of the 2.0 lt 3Y engine i had in 3Y-E multi point with the intace and electronic parts of the Toyota Townace??? does anyone want pictures and details of the six special bases for the hi-lift (2 front 2 rear and two in sides) i allready constructed???
Do not replace the electric
Do not replace the electric winch motor with a hydraulic motor, gear ratios for electric winches are much lower than hydraulic winch gear ratios. This would give you immense pulling power, but the winch would be very very slow in operation, this reduced gear ratio would severely overload the gears, drive assembly, drum, mountings, and the rope itself.
Potentially; you would kill yourself if the rope breaks as i have calculated that the winch would have around 40,000 lbs of pulling power.
Simply look around for a good hydraulic winch, these are commonly available new, or secondhand from military dealers, or off military vehicles, these have the correct gear ratios, and the winches are strong enough to handle the load applied to them.
thanks a lot
Thanks a lot. I am already trying to find a 2nd hand hydraulic in Greece. I will keep you informed...
PS. looking in a catalog i found some days ago two different hydraulic motors with the same specifications the electric motor have (revs and power...). but thanks again. i will be very carefull...
try looking up a company in
try looking up a company in the uk called Ryders, they list the specifications, including gear ratios for hydraulic winches, the information will be useful too you.
