screaming powersteering pump

Forum:

took my daihatsu for mot yesterday and now the steering pump is screaming is this something theyve done and will it settle down as it wasnt screaming before

Screaming

Agreed, the belts on the alternator and steering pully need tightening, typical winter noise. You will find that they will scream on tick over when stationary if you say put yor head lights on. It is annoying and the tightening of the ALt. belt is knuckle scraping and you may find it easier in the long run to drain and remove the RAD. for easier access. If you are unaware of the age of the belts then change them whilst the Rad is out as oil contamination can cause the same problem.

Dont remove the rad !!!!

I agree with olderminiman thas tightening the lower belt is a knuckle scraping exercise. No need to remove the rad .... thats asking for even more trouble! You can remove the upper belt and parts that are removeable which will then give sufficient space to get your hands down the gap. You will need socket spanners.

check steering pump bracket

prob is your belt needing tightened but if its a fourtrak check the bolts holding the pump onto the engine they have a tendancy to slacken or shear of grrrrr, take a good hold and see if there's any movement in the pump remembering the belt will be holding it tightish.prob not this but worth checking since your in that area, cheers bill

Follow the other posts and eliminate the belt, if it is worn it is prudent to rub the steering pump pulley with sandpaper to remove the glaze and help the new belt to bed in.

To test the pump, put the steering on full lock and see if starts pulsing through the steering wheel, if it does it is the pump, replace it with a reconditioned unit.

Also check for oil contamination, this is not uncommon due to a build up of emgine oil leaking, use a degreaser and jet wash it off, also check for a build up of mud and slime, this will make the belt slip.
