Hi all,
My 96 sporty has decided it wants to bless me with an incredibly annoying squeak. I changed the oil a couple of weeks ago, and i spilt a tiny bit on the belt by the fan. I assumed that the tiny squeaking i get when initally started up was just this oil. Although just got into the car now, and its decided it wants to squeak constantly. I think it is one of the belts, as it increases with acceleration (to a certain point). It has been absolutly bucketing it down with rain here all day, and ive been out in the car all day so im not sure whether this is the problem. As it is dark i cannot see properly into the engine bay.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks

Belts
I think you have identifed the problem. Remove and clean each belt.
Contaminated belts soak up
Contaminated belts soak up oil, this, combined with damp weather will make them squeak also.
Check the condition and tension of the belts, during the winter they often squeak due to the higher loads placed upon then due to lights, heaters, rear screen demisters, etc all being switched on together, thus increasing the electrical demands of the vehicle.
When replacing belts, scuff the inside edges of the pulleys with sandpaper, this removes the glaze on the pulleys and helps the belts bed in, and gives more bite for the belts.
Cheers
Excellent, thanks for the replies people. Ill check the condition of the belts, although without a manual i wont be removing any yet. Cheers
