Forum:
Hello on this fine evening )-:
I have a problem starting my daihatsu engine which I would like some advice on. I'm afraid I'm 'one of those' with a daihatsu in my series landy!
Basically I have to switch glowplugs on for a long time (10+ secs) before the engine starts and when it does start, its a bit rough, really smokey and lacking a bit of power! As soon as I get down the road it settles down and the smoke dissappears, which makes me think either injectors or glowplugs. I've read a few posts on here from people with similiar problems and just wondered what advice you would offer in terms of checking the glowplugs/injectors etc...
I live near milner offroad which seem to do glowplugs at a reasonable price, but not sure if they sell injectors. Does anyone know what sort of price I'd be looking at for a set of new injectors? Also, are there any other problems that might cause the poor starting and smoke?
Thanks

Glow plugs.
Glow plugs are failing to heat the fuel. Could be just one or two. When car has started the 'cold' cylinder[s] blows black smoke until the cylinder[s] heats and fires the fuel and the black smoke disappears.
Have you cleaned and checked tightness of wires before blaming the glow plug[s].
Thanks for your advice
Thanks for your advice guy's. I will check the electrical connections tomorrow and make sure I'm getting a good voltage to the plugs. If I remember rightly it should be 7 volts? Any idea what kind of current they draw?
Also do you think there might be any problem with the fuel injectors? I hope it is the plugs as I think new injectors would be quite pricey!
try glow plugs and change
try glow plugs and change them all on mine when current apllied they all glew but found out its a rezistance of them that dictates how long they stay on mine was very simla symptoms to yours then when changed its instant smooth startup by the way im in n.ireland now but my fourtrak came from mansfield lol
own a volvo 940 se desial and a fourtrak 2.8 turbo desial
What colour smoke on
What colour smoke on startup? Excessive whiteish/light blue that quickly changes to normal? Then this is normal, highlighted by your cold tempratures over there at this time of the year. The hard starting would have been due to the same cause.

Smokey starting!
Unfortunately, after changing the glow plugs, I've still got a lot of smoke during starting
I'm not sure where to look next but I noticed my fuel pump only has one 12v wire going to it for the solenoid but there are a couple of other connections on the pump connector. Does anyone know what these are for? I hope they aren't anything to do with cold starting!
Also whilst I was giving her a service, i fitted a new cold air induction filter to the intake pipe. Now the car seems slightly down on power, presumably because there is more air but the same fuel mixture and it doesn't idle so nicely. Do I need to turn the mixture screw slightly. After changing the filter, my coolant temperature now stays much lower than it used to, before the landy guage would nearly be in the red almost all the time! The reason I put the new filter on is because the old one didn't really fit my engine bay and it was sucking in hot air from around the engine.
Further problems!
I recently had more problems with the daihatsu. It was stalling all the time and lacking any power. I think this might be related to the other smoking problems. I changed the fuel filter tonight and found it was half full of brown sludge! Think I might have rust in the fuel tank!
I put some injector cleaner in the tank about a month ago and wondering if this has disloged the gung in the tank.
Anyway after changing this and bleeding the air out through the injectors, I'm still having problems. The car now goes like a bomb up to about 30miles an hour then runs out of steam, so I think air is still getting in to the system somewhere. It also doesn't idle very well once you rev the engine and stalls easily. I think it might be through one of the injector seals or the primer button on the filter. One thing I've noticed is that the primer button never goes rock hard. Is this likely to be due to air?
