hi
I HAVE A NEW RAD PUT ON AND AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS I NEED TO FILL UP AGAIN. MY TRUCK IS SMOKING A LOT AT THE START THEN CLEARS. NOT SURE WHAT THIS COULD BE. IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS PLEASE EMAIL ME OR LET ME KNOW.

THE HEATER STOPS WORKING WHEN THE WATER GETS LOW. WHEN I TURN OFF ENGINE I CAN HEAR ALL THE GUGGLING GOING ON WITH THE RAD.
i CANT THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD, BUT ANYONE WITH SOLUTIONS WOULD BE A GRAT HELP.
THANK YOU
JIM.
Leaks
Is the water leaking out externally, or internally? if there is evidence of it leaking onto the floor, you need to remove the underbody protection, run the engine to operating temperature, and using a powerful light, see where it is leaking from.
If there is no evidence of an external leak, it is an internal leak i.e. the water is going into the engine and burning off, the things to look for are white exhaust smoke, and mayonnaise under the oil filler cap. If these are evident, water is leaking into the engine, most likely problems are the cylinder head gasket, or an internal crack, usually in the cylinder head.
Fill the cooling system with water, run the engine to temperature, when it is cool enough to work on, remove all the glow plugs, get an assistant to turn the engine over, while noting which glow plug hole spits fine droplets of water out. This will confirm an internal water leak; begin by removing the cylinder head, noting the gasket condition around the cylinder/s which sprayed out water, if there is evident damage, it is the head gasket.
Get a specialist to examine, and pressure test the cylinder head, this will confirm its condition, if this is shown to leak, it would most likely be cheaper to obtain a good second hand engine.
rad empty every few days
Hi
Not sure of the Vehicle in
but it could be a number of things
The rad cap seal can go allowing the water to boil off. Check once the engine is warm for the pipes to harden showing that the system is pressurised.
Leaks can usually be seen either by water dripping or squirting out or a white dry spray near to the offending leak.
Cylinder head gasket, this is visible usually in 2 way; Steam from the exhaust, quite difficult in the winter months to determine as excess and sludge "salad cream" in the oil where water is mixing with the oil. It will be obvious in the rocker/cam cover and on the dipstick after the oil has settled. The oil will appear grey and the sludge is like Salad Cream.
If there is insuffiecient water pumping around the system the heater will fail to get enough and an air lock will probably occur that will need to be purged when you top up. Top up run and top up as the water goes down. That should shift it but if not remove the outbound heater hose, again dependant on the car, WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING TILL WATERFLOWS.
I have re read you item and you have a new RAD. so it is likely to be air.
Finally what does the temp. guage run at?

Could be ............
In short ... a big potential problem!
However, did the previous rad coolant need constant top-up?
Check:
1. The radiator cap. Was it replaced or renewed? The seal in caps loose their ability to seal the water pressure and can 'steam' in use. Try fitting a new seal into the rad cap - using old inner tube is ideal.
2. Check the hose clips, all hoses and pipes.
3. Take a close look at the upper hose to radiator. Many rad input pipes crack at their joint to the radiator. Nothing shows since any leaking coolant evaporates when it leak onto the hot rad.
4. With engine in operating heat and having done a few miles to get it hot, hold a dry rag/cloth over the exhaust pipe. Rev the engine. Is the rag wet? If wet suspect a cylinder head problem - coolant leaking into a cylinder and blown out with the exhaust gas. At best a broken gasket. At worst a cracket cylinder head.
NB ... if its the head gasket dont risk further use. Continuing will creat a 'hot spot' and may damage the cylinder head.
