Loose shock

Forum:

After a bit of off-roading last weekend my leaf sprung Fourtrak develeoped a knock from the back end. I had a look today and it turns out the rear drivers side shock is loose at its top mount. Now i cant work out how to tighten it as when i turn the nut the whole upper shock body twists. Have i done some damage somewhere as i cant see that the nut has worked loose?

Cheers

Loose shocker

Similar happened to me on my Charade if its the nut thats loose, to tighten you got to spin the nut quick.
I bought a cheap battery powered impact wrench and hey presto.
It was only about £20, just attached it to the car battery, let it spin up and clunk -SORTED! Be careful not to over do it or it could easily strip the threads.
You could do it with an air gun type too if you know anyone with a garage etc or even ask nicely at your tyre fitters and let them have a go.
If its not that then i've no idea, i'll leave that to the offroad guys.
Good luck!
Dave.

Lift the carpet in the back,

Lift the carpet in the back, under the back seat. There is a cover held by 4 bolts. Remove the cover and this exposes the top of the shock. The shaft should have a pair of flats on the top. Hold this with a spanner while tightening the nut with another spanner. Or elso hold the stone shield by hand, while tightening.

Only had time today to have

Only had time today to have a quick look, and it turns out the nut didnt loosen off but the rubber underneath the top mount has somehow dissapeared. Ive got a suitable replacement but this still leaves me with the problem of getting it out.

The shocks are replacement ones so dont have the flat bit at the top for a spanner and i thinks the whole things to loose for even an impact wrench to work. Would it do any damage if i clamped the stone guard?

Thanks for the suggestions

clean the middle out, if no

clean the middle out, if no flats then theres usually a fitting for allan keys, if not try holding the outer shroud, it you must clamp it then clamp the top of the shroud where its stonger

Shocks

Access is via 2 plates beneath the rear passenger seat. I assume the shocks are not the electrical 3 phase type as getting the tops off will be a bugger. If normal shocks the bolt part that protrudes above the securing nut has 2 flats on ( as previously written) and you hold this using a small open ended spanner while undoing the nut on the shaft. Remember how the bit come off the top of the schock and then you will have to withdraw the shock from the locating bracket to replace the last rubber. If you have difficulty getting the shock to compress then the bottom bolt securing the lower end of the shock will have to be removed allowing you tothen withdraw the entire shock. TIP: I always replace mine using plenty of Red Rubber greese to feed the rubber and keep it supple whilst preventing water etc from rotting the rubber or dirt from drying it out and cracking/perrishing it which is likey why your's went in the first place. The Red Rubber Grease also keeps the threads rust free for future problems as these can cease.

Good Luck

Done

Thanks for the help, got it sorted now.

There were no flats or inserts or anywhere to hold it with tools so i just got underneath with a pair of gloves and held the top part whilst my helper undid the nut. I put some grease on as you suggested too so hopefully i wont get the same problem anytime soon

I just changed my rear

I just changed my rear shocks, didn't know about the access plate in the boot! Used a power hacksaw to remove the old ones and a bit of fiddling to fit the new ones.
