MOT Failure

Forum:

Ok folks, been a while since ive been on here, but its justified.

Heres an abridged tale of events.

I was driving my '91 Rocky when i stopped at a roundabout junction, then before i knew it, i was hit from behind on the left rear side by a Pajero!!

As a result, I was damaged, and my Rocky was damaged, but hopefully, only cosmetically. Rear left step dented, tow bar almost snapped in half.

But where its been sitting over the past few months, i think it may have grown some wear and tear.

Took for MOT which revealed a multitude of probs.
listed below

thanx guys

So as you can see, there is a bit of work that needs doing. However, it still runs fine (dont worry, havent been driving it except up and down the street, oh and to and back from the mot place!)

Anyway, i have been given a quote on getting the wrong righted. but i was just wondering what you guys think i should do?

Keep it or admit defeat? How much would you be willing to pay to get it through

Trouble is, im really fond of my Tonka and i really DONT want to get rid. Even if i did, im not in a situation at the moment to replace it.

I took to a local 4x4 specialist near me on a Friday and was told he'll get back to me on the Monday with some info and quotes....... 4 weeks later, i went to pick it up after keeping being told he'll look at it ... he never did!!

But im off to another place with the certificate tomorro (05-01-08) for a quote.

Thanx guys.

Hi there,

they are all wear and tear parts that have to be done at some point, usualy not all at once though!
Doing it yourself could be at a very reasonable cost but if you have to get a garage to do it just shop around and judge it from there.
Daihatsu parts are never cheap, always be prepared for a suprise. However stuff can be found here and there like Ebay etc as stockists clear out old stock.
Look at it this way, once repaired these things wont need doing again for quite a while and surely still cheaper and easier than getting rid and buying maybe another money shredder!!
Its well known that once they find one thing wrong they go to town on it and the list becomes endless.
Sometimes its worth paying for a second oppinion on the expensive stuff, especially on the things you cant see Wink

Good luck,
Dave.

Hi DD

Thanx for that, i am still awaiting a quote from the garage as i know as much about fixing cars as the poope does about sex with females!!

Im prepared to fork out £500 tops, dya think that would be enough?
One quote was given at £350, but i wasnt too sure about the garage that gave me that quote.

Thanx again

MOT Repairs

Hi,
dont know much about part prices for 4x4's but £350 all in sounds fairly reasonable.
Price up the parts from a local parts factors (not Halfords etc) and roughly work out the labour costs. Then you will know who's reasonable or not.
Alot of garages charge £20 to £30 plus per hour and should be able to sort yours in a day.
good luck,
Dave.

mot failure

Hi

Sounds a lot of bits on the list but some items are because of others. Most are related and are due to normal wear and tear. Discks are not expensive and most other of the bits mentioned will not be that dear. The only bit that you may not be able to do your self is welding.

A local small garage or a private mechanic will do the lot in a day. Not sure about the costs of labour as some are really high.

I always think if you really like the vehicle then repairing is better than scrapping and it is what the car is worth to you not on the market. Very few Daihatsu 4x$ achieve any where near what they are worth and are a really good buy. So...I'd keep it!!!

Ebay is a great palace to source both old and new bits, discs should be under £40 the pair, shocker rubbers, most of us have these lying about but shouldn't be more than a few quid, exhaust depends on haw much has to go , but sound pretty terminal so shop around the Exhaust centre on that, the handbrake is usually the rear self adjusters not working and is half hour job to remove the drums and take that up and along with the new discs that should help the service brake efficiency. Dependant on the cost of the exhaust it should only be a few hours work for a good mechanic, £3-400.

UPDATE

Thanx for everyones input on this.

Ebay is no good to me as i dont have a debit card, which is a shame as there are quite often a few rareities on there.

I got the quote from the garage and its £539.
Thats including parts and labour and they will do it in a day.

Does that sound reasonable? The other place i tried with the £350 quote didnt include labour.

Believe it or not, There are only one or two garages that deal with 4x4 in Milton Keynes so my choices are limited.

And no, i dont know anyone whos good with cars or has a garage.

MOT FAILURE

Doesn't sound too much if they are doing the lot and you want to keep the car going. The bits will all last a good few years so it is hopefully a one off. Will they do the MOT retest as well in the price or is that down to you?

MOT FAILURE

I do hope so, it will be real swell to have her back to her glory!

As for the MOT factor, i was thinking about that myself, will give them a call tomorro and see what they say.
Shouldnt be a problem as they're getting over half a grand off me.

mot's in mk

hi
well apart from the exhaust (which you can always stick a bakedbean can around with a bit of putty, or weld) this seems to be front and back brakes and a couple of wheel bearings, about £260.00 plus postage will sort it from www.milneroffroad.com if not there are a couple of smaller factors in mk that might be able to help you out one is JB Autos in queen ann st in new bradwell the other is Masumin motor spares in fenny stratford both of theses have always sorted out my problems but if not, part co (robbin Bars*)will be able to get them or if there is really no one else motorserve, as to getting a shop to do the job try, try safe mots on bradwell or a1 mots on kiln farm if they cant do it then the car and van centre in bletchley should do it or protech on granby are worth a try, if not back page of the citizen but all of it shouldn't take longer than a day, maybe two but it is deffo worth keeping as these are just running repairs and nothing serious

ok, so my FT went in this

ok, so my FT went in this morn ready for surgery.
All was going well until i got a phone call.

Apparently, i need £300 - 400 of wielding!!!
The last MOT'ers missed out on that!

So i think its time to take this FT to the retirement farm.
It still works great but just not for the road.
Thanx for all advice though.

I best find me another!
