Forum:
hi all, i was checking the water level in our Rocky this morning and really struggled to get the radiator cap off, it is as if the rubber/fibre washer that fits in the neck HAS GROWN outwards, it is such a tight fit in the neck it is almost impossible to get it off.
I realise that the spring (in the cap) is designed to keep the rubber/fibre washer in contact with the bottom of the neck, so the when the water pressure increases it lets the water go into the expansion tank,
So this fibre/rubber washer doesnt really need to be a tight fit in the neck, so will it be ok to trim it a little around the edge so that the cap comes on and off easier ?.

radiator cap almost impossible to remove ????
It sound that the seal is knackered and the cap need replacing. The spring opens the seal at a designated pressure and allows the excess water into the header tank. Once the car cools and the pressure reduces the tube then draws the water back. If you cut the seal and lose the pressure the car will run hot because the boiling point is reduced by the system not being not being pressured. You will then see an increase in the temp guage and could boil your water off via the header tank overflow.
I have in the past removed and flipped the seals over but it is only a temp. measure. Check that the lugs that secure the cap to the neck of the rad. have not been knocked and distorted causing it to dig in to the lip of the neck or that the surfaces are not corroded.
