Hi all. Nice website!!
I have a problem with my water/heater on my 93 sportrak. The heater doesn't work too well and the temp never seems to get any hotter than a quarter of the way up the guage. if that!!!
Im going to change the thermostat this weekend and will get a different rad cap as this could be leaking and stopping pressurisation of the system. Any other suggestions?
Can anyone advise me on removing the power steering vane pump, is it tricky to do?
I have another issue too. I think my auto hub on the front driver side is sticking as i get a rachetey noise when i have just reversed then go forward. If i break hard or jerk the wheel it goes. Any advice on greasing up the bearings etc?
Its the only thing wrong with it and i want it to be perfect for the summer!
Hi,I'd say you have a
Hi,
I'd say you have a thermostat sleeping on the job, and it would sound like a good idea to give the entire cooling system an overhaul if you'll be digging that deep as it is worth it in the end it can also help prevent premature failure of headgaskets, heater matrix's and the like which Sportraks seem to have an appetite for.
Drain all the old fluid via the plug at the bottom of the rad., change the therm., then slowly fill the system with just water to start. Run to temp. Drain all the water again. If poss, give the rad a flush and clean between the vanes with a hosepipe (NOT a pressure cleaner) and give the expansion bottle the once over. If all's well Fill with a 50/50 water/antifreeeze mix to help prevent corrosion.
The PS pump is an easy enough off job, hinges on a bolt IIRC and rarely gives probs. Might be an idea to replace both belts for the price they are (about a tenner for both) while you are at it down there. There is a tensioner bolt to help pull it back in.
I'm a virgin with autohubs, but doubtless Mace or OldMiniMan will be along soon to put you right!

Auto hubs
Had lots of problems with the auto hubs on my Fourtrak, replaced them with manual ones, just remenber to engage them before you really need them. One of the best jobs I have done, no hoping they will engage when you need them. They are either engaged or not. No worries, just keep them well greased.

Therm and cap
Make certain you buy the correct type of thermostat. Sporty thermostat is much longer than normal thermostats. They cost approx £17. Use sealant plus the new gasket that comes supplied. Take care not to over tighten the nuts when refitting the housing. Job is very easy to complete.
Also fit the new thermostat with the jiggle at its highest ... the hole in the thermostat placed uppermost so any air bleeds from the coolant.
Removal of power vane is easy ... just look for the bolts [one is hidden l;ower down].
Rad cap ... try cutting a new seal from a piece of inner tube. Also squeeze slightly the lips on the old cap so it fits very snug to the radiator.
BUY MANUAL HUBS!
Take off your auto hubs and buy manual ones. They can always be trusted and never fail! I absolutely hate auto hubs. At least with manual hubs they are either in or out and you know, because you have to twist them yourself.
If you do want to have a look at your auto hubs, make sure they are free and not engaged then remove the smaller bolts around the cap and take it off. It will be farily easy to see if the teeth are worn or the hub is dry.
oldminiman or bundy might be able to help further... All these guys are an absolute wealth of knowledge.
