Sportrak Winch

Forum:

Hi all,

Am planning on fitting a winch to a 96(N) sportrak can anyone advise me on which winch to buy?

I have found a local garage that have said they would make me a winch bumper, and all i had to do is take it into the garage with a rough sketch of what i wanted the bumper to look like.

many thanks

tom

On The Pull

An 8000lb winch should suffice for most applications, if this is for self recovery only; if not a 9500lb winch would be faster.

8000lbs gives just over three and a half tonnes of pull, this would overcome gradients, and being bogged down in mud. Check suppliers web sites, Ryders winches supply all the technical information including technical drawings for all dimensions including mounting holes.

Assuming this is to be an electric winch, some precautions need to be observed in respect of the battery. Look for CCA, this is cold cranking amps, winch manufacturers specify a minimum cold cranking amps from the battery, this should be marked on the sticker on your battery. Warn Winches for example, specify a minimum CCA of 650 for their 9500lb models, your battery, depending on vehicle specification, could be as low as 450CCA, this would mean fitting a new battery with 650CCA or higher. Failure to use the correct battery will mean the winch does not perform at anywhere near its rated pull.
