Clicking noise/Loose wheel

Forum:

drove my fourtrak today, and found what i though to be a loose wheel. tightened it up, and it still has some give in it (perhaps a couple of mm). took the wheel off, tightened the caliper as i changed the pads yesterday, everything is fine. when i drive, or go round a corner it makes a clicking noise, perhaps the bearings?

Wheel Bearing

If you have movement whilst grasping the wheel off the ground, top and bottom and can feel it knocking then it usually indicates wear in the wheel bearing. Usually the MOT will pick it up and if bad it will fail, or you will get a note of excessive play. Clicking can sometimes be as simple as a stone in the tread of the tyre wheras clunking usually points to ward worn CV joint(s). I have driven a Morris Minor with odd clicking noises on turning which turned out to cracks in the wheells around the nuts.

cheers for the replies!

the model is a 2.8td 1991 fourtrak. I jacked it up, and yeh, the wheel has play in it which leads me to think its wheel bearings. the brake disc also slightly moves too. Could is be the king pin you think? cheers

Wheel Bearing

Hi

If you can feel movement on the disk then iit is quite bad unless the bolts securing the disk are loose? The diameter of the wheel exagerates the movement and the wheel bearing knocks through you hand whilst you are grasping.

King Pin? I think they went outwith the Morry Minor type set up and were replaced with the top and bottom swivel joints on the hubs. I may be wrong but I don't think you will find them on your Fourtrak, well certainly not the kind I recall. Smile

Hi, what fourtrak is it - independant or live front axle, cos if its live front axle then the whobble could be coming from the swivel joint, if you whip of the wheel and wobble the brake disc, place a finger where the 'challis' type end is(the shiny part that swivels inside the hub housing)and the the hub itself so as you wobble the disc, you can feel any play in the swivel - hope you understand this, basically your looking for movement on that swivel joint, it will be obvious, if its yes then you can remove shims on the bearing housing by undoing the four studs underneath and the five on top where the swivel bearings go, you will see wafer thin metal plate, remove and do back up, movement then goes - this is temporary, get new bearings, keep metal shims safe in the sevice manual (flat book for protection), sorry if this is gobble de goop, if its an independant then could be cv's, bearings like oldminiman says.....
