Hi,
i have just bought a 1993 sportrak and am just a bit concerned as it seems to be rough as an old dog! Now im a complete newbe and this is my first 4x4 but is this one knackered?
1. There is a dodgy noise when you reverse with the wheels turned. Its almost like a clicking/clunking which stops after a minute or two or when u brake hard when pulling off, any ideas?
2. The gears. they go in and out ok but are very noisy and when i leave my hand on the stick it makes an horrible grating noise as if its vibrating against something!
Now its MOT'd and drives fine other than the above, help me please!!!!
Oil
Any oil of correct type in the gear box?
Beware .... you must undo the correct filler plug or bits drop into the gear box.
I suggest you buy a w/s manual on CD.

Welcome to the Sportrak world.
1. As above, CHECK GEARBOX OIL. The correct filler/level plug is on the nearside of the 'box, about 1/2 way up on the side. A 24mm ring spanner is reg. for best results. Also do the diff oil.
2. Grinding noises are often caused by the steering stops on the front end needing grease - they look like small round cups. a good dollop should quieten things down. Also, grease the nipples on the propshaft UJ's and the 6 or so grease points on the front steering assy regularly.
3. Change engine oil ASAP unless you are aware of it's history. Likewise, regularly change the coolant and use a good antifreeze/inhibitor. I always run a 50/50 mix.
4. Many cars with a long stick will transfer 'box noises when you rest your hand on it. Nowt to worry about.
5. GET IT SERVICED.

I AGREE WITH DAVE H BUT WOULD ADD:
CHECK BOTH THE TRANSFER BOX, FRONT AND REAR DIFF OIL LEVELS. IN ADDITION UNLESS YOU ARE AWAREOF WHEN THE LAST CAM BELT WAS CHANGED THEN CHANGE IT. NOT A DIIFICULT JOB WITH A MANUAL. IT IS ALSO WORTH GREASING ALL THE STEERING AND SUSPENSION NIPPLES AND THOSE ON EACH PROP. UJ. THESE ARE BUGGERS TO GET TO.

greasing help!!!!!!!
forgive my noviceness but how do you grease things with the nipples. does grease go into them? do i just coat it?? i have no clue, help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
grease
You need a proper grease gun, any motor / agricultural store will sell grease guns and grease, you put the end onto the nipple - push, it clicks on then pump in grease - easy but also a bit messy.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Problems Problems Problems
In addition to the other posts, i would suggest the following:
1/ check the wheel bearings, remove the freewheeling hub, and adjust the bearings, these are notorious for neglect, also remove the grease from them once adjusted, and repack with fresh grease.
2/ check the suspension and anti-roll bar bushes and joints, once worn, these cause large amounts of lateral movement in the suspension; replace with polyurethane type.
3/ Check the suspension itself, springs tend to wear on most models, paint leaf springs with old engine oil to help prevent wear from corrosive or abrasive dust getting between the leaves. Coil springs need their ends checking as cheap replacements have a tendency to snap their ends, also check the spring mounting pads.
4/ check ALL the steering components, begin with the steering box and work through all the steering rods, ball joints etc.
