Charade expansion tank boils

Forum:

I have a 1994 Charade 1.3iEFI. When you start the car and leave it to run for 20-30mins it does not boil or overheat, when you take it for a short drive for 5-10 miles, the water in the radiator starts to boil into the expansion tank, the cap comes off the expansion tank, then you start to lose water through it ,when the car cools down, the water drains back to the radiator, less the water that has boiled out of the expansion tank. some times when you start the car it revs -erratically.
have had a new rad, thermostat, and rad cap, have had the headgasket checked no problems here.Have been told it might be the rad cap,and I need to get one with a double seal round the cap,and not just on the centre of cap ?.If anybody can help ,would be greatful for advise.

Head gasket.

Get the cylinder head checked by a good mechanic. Your car needs a compression test. The symptom is a faulty cylinder head gasket, compression passing into a water channel and the coolant is being pumped under pressure into the radiator to be expelled under pressure.
I suspect there is exhaust fumes in the radiator. When cool unscrew the cap and sniff the coolant .. radiator and overflow tank. I bet it smells of exhaust fumes.

If you suspect the cap, try packing a piece of inner tube into the cap. Secure the cap onto the radiator to give a very tight fit. I doubt if the cap is the problem.

Cooling Prob

HI
Sounds like you have checked all the normal stuff so I would suggest taking out the engine radiator and getting it flow tested by your local specialist, possible on a car of your age water way may be abit clogged up so slowing coolant flow.
