Forum:
I have a 1986 Domino engine + gearbox unit in a special.I cannot get 5th gear to engage.
The problem is definately in the gearbox. Using the change mechanism directly on the box without linkages, the 5th gear selector seems to move correctly and it feels as though the detente ball has engaged the groove, however 5th is not engaged. The car drives perfectly in all other gears.
It think the selector mechanism must have failed in the box, perhaps the fork has come off the rod
Has anyone had similar problems

Having worked on daihatsu's many years as a techy, the problem they had was fifth gear shearing ON THE SPLINES.This is easy done by removing the end gearbox cover, remove the end shaft nuts 5th gear and hub replace with new and rebuild. This is a easy task for somebody who mechanically minded.HOPE THIS HELPS MICK....

Domino - No 5th gear
Thanks Mick, That is very helpful.
Do you know if this work can be done with the gearbox still in the car
My Domino has evolved into a single seat three wheeler which passed its MSVA last November.
As am now using it, I wish I had realised there was a problem before putting the engine in.

Yes it can be done with g/box in situ, drop subframe on nearside only for access to remove cover etc.HOPE THIS HELPS MICK,PS DONT KNOW THE SETUP ON YOUR VEHICLE.

Domino - no 5th gear
Thanks again Mick
It is a tight fit in the spaceframe so I may have to drop both sides. Bit of a pain as I will have to disconnect the exhaust I fabricated and I have the last gasket in the country !
May delay the job for a while as I am busy for the next two weeks and prefer not to waste sunny days working on cars.
