Forum:
Hi guys, can any one help me out there!
I have searched the forum about changing automatic locking hubs to manual locking hubs and it seems quite straightforward.
My main worry is getting a matching part for the year of my vehicle, which is 1994 sportrak elxi.
I realise that some (from what I have read, mainly the automatic hubs) have 6 stud fixing and some (the manual hubs) have a 5 stud fixing. I also no that milners off road do a 6 stud manual locking hub but I can't afford the £150 price tag, I am looking for a scrappy! So if anyone could shed any light on manual locking wheel hubs compatible for a 1994 sportrak for the cheapest of prices please let me know! I would prefer to not get replacement automatic hubs, as I don't want to buger them again! What year of vehicles can I source parts from? Any help is much appreciated.
Hubs
Manual hubs were fitted to early models, a number of later models had them replaced with manual hubs; try to source a model being broken for spares with manual hubs fitted.
Why are you replacing your automatic items? are they defective or are you unsure of them. If they work ok, it is simply a matter of maintaining them properly, many auto hubs suffer from lack of maintenance and become filled with dirt, water, or a combination of the two.
Maintenance is simply a matter of periodically removing them, cleaning, and repacking with a waterproof grease, once a year is more than ample to maintain them.
they are not locking, the
they are not locking, the previous owner of the car had not used the 4x4 function in years and it seems that they have sezied up. i looked at one of them and when undoing all the bolts muddy water was releasied. do you think if i completely remove them and clean them i may get the automatic hubs working? if so how do i completley remove them. once i have undone all the bolts the hub is loose but i cant seem to fully remove it. Cheers, Chris

if like Fourtraks- have you removed the cover plate in center of hub and removed bolt/snap ring before trying to pull hub off

cheers for your post! i managed to work out how to remove them today but i still havent managed to fix the problem! it is driving me mad!
Stripped automatic hubs down
today after work i spent ages striping the hubs down and re greased them, check them for seized parts and put them back on. on one of the hubs one of the springs had poped out of place so i striped that down and refited it with the help of the daihatsu manual. They still dont work!
The centre bolt on the hubs underneath the outer cover turns with the wheel when in 4wd and then stops turning and the rest of the hub turns when in 2wd. so it looks like there locking but not with any true force to drive the wheels. which part of the automatic system is buggered surley it is fixable. Also is it definatly the hub! the drive shaft to the front wheels is turning so it not the trasnsfer case (if that the right part I am thinking of?? My mechanical knowlage is forever growing). Any idears guys? Thanks!
Relative Motion
Auto hubs need relative motion to make them lock into position; in simple terms the axle shafts need to turn, this throws the spring from the central position and engages them. Once drive is disconnected, i.e. the vehicle is at rest, the spring returns to the central position and they do not drive until the shafts begin turning.
Systems work on the axle driving the wheel, or when freewheeling downhill, the wheel driving the shaft.
Testing on a stationary vehicle will show them not to be working as the force needed to overcome the spring will be more than that applied by hand. Testing will involve driving on a slippery surface to allow the engines power to engage them.
