How to use the transfer box?

Sorry if it sounds a daft Q, but I don't have a handbook & (the door label has worn away with excess polishing from the first owner!)

Up to now I have always switched when stationary. 2H to 4H is easy. The problem comes when I move across the gate, the lever 9 times out of 10 will not pull back, even into neutral.... a real pain.
When it does go I can move on to select 4L without a problem.

Now if it was baulking i would expect neutral to be easy & 4L difficult.

I tried to select when moving very slowly & all was easy except for the inevitable slight crunch.

What am I doing wrong guys?

Try putting the gearbox into nutral first. Daft sounding, but can help.

Nev. I tried all ways....neutral...clutch out/in ..... still the same

I'M NOT SURE IF THE 4H BUTTON WORKS? HOW CAN YOU TELL AND WHEN SHOULD I USE IT?
