Fourtrak Oil Filter Q.

Forum:

Hi guys

Anyone know if the oil filter has a non-return valve in it?
It's a 94 TDS
Thxs.

Re: Non-return valve

Why do you ask? I was wondering the same thing since every time I start the engine, even if its just been switched off for a few minutes, it takes about 6 or 7 seconds for the oil light to go out, just like it does after a new filter is fitted. I thought that maybe the oil in the filter is somehow draining back into the sump. Any thoughts?

Why I asked

Thxs aj.

My oil light goes out goes out within two seconds which is why, with an inverted filter, I thought there might be a valve.
It could be in the filter housing rather than the filter of course....if there is one.

The reason I asked is that I have a number of other filters that should fit & want to use them up..... Yes I'm tight Smile

Who inserted the pic?

I did not insert the pic, & I do not seem to be able to edit it out.

Will a mod please explain?

Oil filters are fitted with a non return valve in them, most are these days.
When the engine is started it has to reach a speed where the oil pump will fill the internal pipes to the filter, then push it up the internal oil galleries to the engine internals.

Oil lights going out rely on many factors, the state of the oil pump, the viscosity of the oil itself, the state of the filter, and usually the state of the crankshaft bearings.

Worn crankshaft bearings play the biggest part, ones wearing will mean the oil pump has to pump longer to prime them due to "leakage" and then pressurise the rest of the system to the 3-5 psi required to operate the oil light switch.
