There is a weird sort of film peeling off of the headlights and indicators on my YRV. I thought there had been lamp protectors or something on them but I don't think this is the case. Anybody else come across this?

Not seen this on my YRV
Not seen this on my YRV turbo, and I have washed it a few times now.
How old is the car? Maybe they weren't taken off when the car arrived at the dealership.

Headlamp Covering
Some Polycarb headlamp lenses have a sprayed or pored on protective film to prevent the polycarb discolouring (A big problem here in OZ) it may well be this that has started to peel off for some reason (Chemical reaction etc)
