Forum:
Hi, hope someone can help me.I've recently bought a sportrak,it has drove with no problems until recently.
It will start first time in the morning but if I turn the ignition off it will not start again for anything upto an hour after. When it does start it runs like a dream, it just does not like starting when its been switched off.All the usual bits have been checked but now I'm at a loss.ps there is sometimes a smell of petrol but not always.
Any help would be great.Thanks.
Sportrak Starting
Yes I have had this problem and it seems to worsen the more you attempt to start the car.
Like mine you have the Injection model with an EMU.
I usually resolve the problem by spraying WD40 on to the terminal at the boTtOm of the coil. I think in reality a sensor is preventing damage to the Cat by preventing starting with too much fuel in the chamber and my nipping out with the spray allows this to evaporate and reset.
Try starting the car with the clutch down and don't touch the throttle until it is started. By pumping the throttle more fuel is passed to the chamber and further delays incurred due to flooding. Older car that flooded could be resolved by flooring the throttle and expelling the excess fuel down the exhaust. I don't think this practice will help and may worsten the situation and damage the cat.
Having said that an Hour seems a long time so you may want to use the diagnostics to see if one of the sensors is at fault.
If you look back through the forum I have written the details of how to interpret the diagnotics codes.

sportrak starting
had a similar problem twice , first time was the fuel pump wiring by the plug on fuel pump , corroded , took some finding but cut the plug off & joind the wires(temp job)worked fine, second time was the temp sensor back of the head by dissy cap (B to change) but this had fault light on before it cut out.
hope it helps.KJ
More needed.
You need to give more info about your Sporty.
Year.
Carb or injection
Model.
forgot to say it is K reg
forgot to say it is K reg and injection.
Well it has just done
Well it has just done something new, on changing down to second gear the revs dropped off and then cut out, 10mins in the middle of the road till it started again, then 5 mins after the same thing again.
I Agree
I agree your new problems seems to point to the coil failing. I had the same and a new one is about £40 from a motor factor, not HALFORDS.
You can, if you have an old style coil, use that by cutting the LT wires leaving sufficient length on the terminal end to rejoin them when you get the new coil. It was a pain when mine went for the second time so I now carry a spare and touch wood have never had to use it..sod's law.

Coiled
Sounds possibly like the coil beginning to break down.
When the coil is cold or cool it will perform properly and provide a good spark, as it warms up the output is reduced giving a poorer spark.
When the coil is hot it breaks down altogether, when it cools down sufficiently it will work for a short time before it heats up and fails again.
Due to the combustion characteristics of the engine it will work with a relatively weak spark, thus preventing problems showing themselves in the same way as a higher performing modern engine would.
Well the car wouldn't start
Well the car wouldn't start again today so I tested the coil.
It was working A1 anymore ideas please.
Fuel starvation ........
Try starting, re-starting with the petrol tank cap removed. Could be a vacuum in the tank preventing flow of fuel.
Thanks for all the
Thanks for all the advice.
Taking the petrol cap off makes no difference, but I'll try the petrol pump wires and temp later.
After that I think I'll give up.
Thanks again everyone
Full w/s manual on CD.
Mary ..... you need to buy a full w/s manual available on CD. It lists servicing, wiring diagrams, shows all Sporty exploded parts, lists fault checking/locations etc. The CD is essential if you own a Sporty.
Service manual [CD] which I have is "Daihatsu 4x4 Feroza F300-Sportrak April 30 2001. Version 1."
I see your Sporty is a Kreg and is included on my CD. I am not certain if the CD advertised on this site is the same as the full version. Message me if you want a copy - not expensive!
Just some thoughts.
Just some thoughts.
Turn the ignition till all the dash lights come illuminate before the engine starts. is the orange engine managment light on?
If not I would suspect the bulb has been removed to hide a fault when you purchased the truck. replace the bulb and report back if it shows a fault. oldminiman has done several write up on how to perform a self diagnostic test.
I am thinking the green coolant temprature sensor at the back of the engine by the dizzy cap is at fault, Its a famous fault on sportraks. (don't worrie its an easy fix and cost me arround £30 to get the part when I did mine)
I think.... it is not reading that the engine is warm therfore flooding the engine with too much fuel (hence the smell) as it would when the engine is cold, next time it won't start remove the air filter to get as much cold air in as possible to aid starting (remember to replace it if it starts).
Another common fault that causes the petrol smell is a split in the cone shaped black one way valve found behind the rear card/trim/pannel with a speaker in it that is on the drivers side behind the petrol cap, if I remember right it has two pipes going to a black box and the valve is clamped to it. just fix it with some epoxy resin.

I've just done a diagnostic
I've just done a diagnostic check and it has come up with 2 and 4 flashes.
Can someone please tell me more about the pressure sensor and circuit.Like where it is etc.
Thank you

It is the replacememnt water temp sensor I think I ended up paying £20 for one last year and the sent it to Motormania in Cannock for me. which is a massive saving over daihatsu prices.
If I recall I had 2 & 4 flashes and then when I replaced the water temp sender and reset the self diagnostic by disconecting the battery I never had 2 flashes re-apear so the pressure sensor may be ok.

The part number is 89422-30020 so just typing it into google will help you find a supplier, it is used in other trucks like toyota's.
