I left my headlights on overnight and had to recharge the battery. Having fitted the battery, the alrm is now going off and my 'zapper' will not respond. Therefore engine will not turn over and alarm will not turn off. Is there a sequence I am supposed to follow with the zapper to reset or resync the zapper?

Re-set for most zappers is by pointing at the car and press zapper's 'lock' x4 times to re-syncronise.
Since the alarm will not turn off, try disconnecting the 12v battery again and leave it disconnect for 5 minutes. Refit and the alarm should then be disarmed. If not try the zapper again.
Have you fitted a new battery into the zapper? There is a chance the zapper battery has gone down. After removing the zapper battery, press and hold its button for 20seconds to discharge its capacitor. Fit new battery and point to the car and 'lock' x4 to syncronise.
Most alarms have either a key to switch them off at their operating box or a CAT code.
