Bonnet release

Sounds as if the cable may have lost a nipple, boken or disconnected it self from the lever either beneath the bonnet or at the dash end.

If the cable has come away or broken at the dash end, which seems to be the weakest en then you should be able to locate it and tug it releasing the onnet onto the saftey catch. Try gently tugging on the outer cable before dismantling, it may do the trick. If the cable comes thrugh the bulhead easily then it has come away from the underbonnet actuating lever. Of course it is also possible that the spring on the lever has dropped off so you might try operating the inner lever and get someone to lift the front end of the bonnet with their fingers. My Sporty soesn't pop up but is released and need me to lift it a bit onto the safety catch

That will be the easist one to deal with to open the bonnet.

If it is beneath the bonnet then you could try some straining wire via the grill bent to locate the actuating lever which if tugged to the driver side should release it onto the safety catch. this may take a good few attempts and a lot of patience unless you are lucky.
The are not easy to undo in this manner for obvious reasons but it can be done.

An alternative would be to remove the sump pan and get access from beneath but I suspect the font bodywork and rediator will prevent you getting high enough up to locate the lever usually operated by the cable.

GOOD LUCK

Also have had this problem

Also have had this problem with a far simpler (if brainles) solution. It can be that the bonnet has shifted slightly, or the catch. If this is it then to release so you can adjust try this 2 person approch. One pulls the bonnet release, the other hits the bonnet over the catch. If it is hooked up this can sometimes release it. Hve done it a few times.
