Sportrak rear door hinges

Forum:

Hi Everybody, Just bought a cheap old Sportrak (1993) and am working my way through the minor things to bring it up to scratch.
How do I lubricate the rear door hinges? Over the last few days they have stiffened noticeably. Do the pins drift out?

Many thanks.

Rear door hinges

The problem with these is the weight of the spare wheel tends to wear the hinges if not kept lubricated plus they get a good spraying in the rain as you will notice by the state of the rear which being flat gets most of the road dirt liberally sprayed onto it.

I would initially spray them in the grooves with WD40 from inside and outside whilst swinging the door to and throw. That should loosten them upquite quickl for you then wipe off the excess or leave it on in this weather to dry. Then using a thicker oil eg some engine oil or spray on waterproof grease or normal grase in the jonts and let that soak in . Wipe off the excess and do it once a month to prevent further wear and keep them free. Also grease the stay bar and catch at the bottom

Many thanks for the advice - there will doubtless be more questions as I am more used to selling them than fixing them.

PS A '96 Sportrak in our local 4x4 auction yesterday went for £1500!!
I paid £200 for mine, and reckon on another £300 for boots and exhaust to get it nice.

On an old 4trak of mine a previous owner had driled and taped greas nipples into the center section of the hinges. It was the only 4x4 with door mounted tyre I have ever had which suffered no hinge problems.
