Starter Motor - getting it out of my Fourtrak

Forum:

I've used this forum quite a few times for various bit of tech advice, but today I'm stuck on something that's probably far too simple to have been posted about before.

I need to get the starter motor off for a bit of a clean / look into. I'm no mechanic, and too skint to take the car into a garage, so trying to do this mysef.

I'm thinking that the starter unit comes off with two bolts, one at the top, and the other just above the cluch cable.

I can't get either of the bolts to move, the space is so tight, it's hard to get any kind of leverage.

Any tips how to get this off, ie. what direction the bolts should turn, best out of the top of out the bottom, will be easier to get some of the air hoses out of the way.

Thanks
Jason.

Lefty Loosy, Righty Tighty.

Lefty Loosy, Righty Tighty. Ie. Anti-clockwise for undoing. For leverage you need either a crack bar on a half inch drive socket, or if that won't go in / you don't have one two spanners will do it. Put the ring end of the spanner that fits the bolt head? nut? onto said. Then you can hook the ring end of another spanner around the jaws of the open end of the spanner to give more leverage. Another approch is lots of extention bars on a socket with a UJ at the socket end, alowing you to undo from underneath the car, right back near the gearbox crossmember. Loads of room to get leverage on ratchet or crack bar.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Dunno what ya mean

Theres tons of room, try getting one out of a modern car, you need octopus arms and disslocated hands lol, get under the vehicle and get dirty with lots of sockets, spanners and bars lol - same as other comment.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Starter for Ten

I use a 1/2" drive ratchet, six point socket, and two extensions with a U/J in between, this allows full power to be applied, and at a far better angle and position. Always use a six point socket with tight nuts and bolts as driving on the flats prevents rounding off the heads.
