Daihatsu Applause Over Heating

Forum:

Hello All,
Hopefully someone can help me. I've got a Daihatsu Applause (K reg, 1.6 with 50k on the clock) that keeps over heating. The header tank keeps running dry (the engine is boiling), even after a short drive. I've had the thermostat changed and the water pump inspected, but still no joy. The radiator seems OK, in that sticking a hose pipe in one end water flows through. General running of the car is good (i.e. I don't think it's the head gasket). Also the radiator fan doesn't seem to kick in when it does over heat, where is the sensor for water temperature.

Kind Regards to you all,

A few checks.

If the header tank is draining then your motor is loosing coolant. If its boiling after a short run its either a stuck thermostat, water pump failed/broken belt, blocked coolant pipe in engine or radiator, faulty radiator cap or air lock in the system. If each of those prove reliable then sounds like the cylinder head has blown.
Check.
Run engine to hot and remove the reservoir cap. Rev the engine and look for oil or air bubbles appearing in the reservoir. If bubbles or air then suspect a blown head gasket or cracked head.
Remove spark plugs .... if OK they should be grey.
Remove the oil filler plug. If its got yellow/brown/white then suspect water getting into the oilways ... head problem.
A garage sould be able to do a cylinder head compression test which will show any head problems.
