propshaft or uj???

its a 1989 import rugger......
its been jingleing for a couple of weeks, now when driving its juddering... when you take you foot of the excelerator its ok...press the 4x4 button it makes a hell of a racket... any ideas? i have ordered a uj of milner just in case....

Most likely the UJ's as they are strong in their own right, but designed to be the weakest link, if that makes sense.

The UJ's are designed to wear out rather than the propshaft as they are easy and cheaply replaced.

Check for side to side play at the UJ's and always replace a pair on a propshaft. For their cost for four it may be advisable to simply replace all four, ensure they are well greased, and that the splines are also well greased.

thanks for that.....it has been leaking oil from the tranferbox... i keep finding oil on the protection plate.....hoping this has nothing to do with it....

oil leak

Sounds like it could be the bearings that are shot, that will take out the oil seal. Came back of holiday last year to a nice puddle of oil under the diff, oil seal had gone but the main cause was shot bearings.

had a look today, its the rear uj gone... very loose... going in the garage tomorrow...

good luck with them i did my

good luck with them i did my front prosahft ujs today and they were a nightmare every nut and bolt was very tight.
and the ends of the uj the roller bearing housings were jammed solid in the holes on the propshaft.
was this due to neglect do you think or bad workmanship on my behalf.

and can i stop them from seizing for the next time i do them.

copper grease

copper grease, "copper ease" or something along that sort of line on the thread should stop it seizing too badly.

I managed to snap a 14mm spanner while taking the rear drive shaft, must admit it wasn't the best of quality spanner but still it snapped

im not suprised you snapped a spanner i think mine were close today.
ive bought an extra long 14mm for the rears today so hopefully itll be a bit easier.
