DL-42 Running Hot

Forum:

The Daihatsu 2.8L NA diesel (DL-42) in my Land Rover has been running hot (almost to the red zone). I'm not finding anything in the drivetrain that is causing additional drag (although I'm not giving up on that search).

I just replaced the radiator & radiator hoses last weekend and filled with new antifreeze mixture. The heater puts out heat, which (at least to me) implies that there is at least some circulation. The radiator hoses seem to be quite hot and the radiator is very warm. The radiator has a 9lbs cap and it doesn't seem to overflow into the tank (I did test that the overflow tube is not clogged).

The fan works and doesn't rub against the shroud. The fan/alternator belt doesn't appear to be slipping or anything.

I bought a new thermostat, but haven't installed it yet as 1) it looks like the thermostat housing had a crack patched at some point and 2) I wasn't sure if the bolts had to be tightened to a specific torque or whether I could just hand tighten them.

Where does the temperature sensor plug into the engine and what voltage range should I be seeing. Could the temp sensor/sender be bad?

Should I be replacing the water pump? Any suggestions as far as what to test next? Should I not be driving it?

If you are using the LR temp

If you are using the LR temp guage it is going to look hot vs. the 2.25 petrol. Get a VDO guage that reads real temp and I think you will find that you are OK, thats what I did.

Aha, that is very good to know

Aha, that is very good to know. I was wondering that (and hinting at re:checking temp sensor voltages at which point I would've asked over on Rovers North's forums what voltage range the temp gauge accepted) since it doesn't seem to climb much above that or into the red, even after driving it about 40 miles. Are the temp sensor & temp gauge actually volt based so that I could just do some testing and find a resistor to put inline that might make the existing gauge more accurate?

The sender is just a ground

The sender is just a ground actually. The thing is the LR guage has no scale so you don't even know what the edge of red actually is, (I estimate 200 degrees). It's accurate but with no scale. It sounds like you are fine as it is but you can always go to Eguages.com and buy a VDO sender and guage if you really want to know the true temps.

Is the fav a viscous fan? If

Is the fav a viscous fan? If so does it 'lock up' when it should. They quite offten don't after a sertain age. Put 'viscous fan' into the site serch feature, there are many opinions about haw to fix this. Also give a serch under 'over heating' a try.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Not sure

I'm not sure if it's a viscous fan or not. I'll see if there's any resistance in turning it by hand after I've driven the 40 miles home tonight. Sounds like it's actually not running hot, but I'll test anyway.
