Hi,
need to change the gearbox on a 87 diesel fourtrak that I have just bought but not sure if later ones will fit as there seem to be plenty of TD gearboxes around and the non turbo ones are pretty scarce any help appreciated

Yes they will fit. Things to
Yes they will fit. Things to look out for. The transfur might be a switch opperated 4x4 instead of the lever opperated I would guess yours is. The transfure can be swaped. If you get a Petrol box you will have to swap the input shaft and bell housing from yours as the Petrol one is slightly longer. Also the terbo'd 4traks have a slightly higher output ratio on the transfur box. Again if this is a problem you can change the trasfur for your original one.
Why do you need to change it? There are some farly common problems with these boxes which are eisily fixed.

well.....
we seem to live in a society where it is cheaper to replace than to repair, something goes wrong inside your engine a new one can be bought and exchanged cheaper than it would to take apart buy parts and put back together.
Anyway the problem is that it doesn't like to go into 2nd and crunches when going down the gears and not up? my knowledge is all but useless when it comes to gearboxes
Classic mainshaft nut symptoms
This sounds like a classic case of loose mainshaft nut syndrome. There is a lot of detailed information on how to fix this in the archives of this forum. Use the search function to search for "mainshaft nut" and you'll find plenty.
In short, you need to separate the main gearbox from the transfer box and tighten the nut on the end of the mainshaft. Some people have also welded the nut on to prevent it loosening again.
I'll dig up some threads and post the links if you can't find anything.

thanks for the advice
will look that up, will also check the oil level in the box although I suspect more than somethinbg that easy.
Totally new to fourtraks so thanks for the advice
Sounds like the syncros are
Sounds like the syncros are done in.
gearbox ratios
Hi
If your car is non turbo don't fit a TD gearbox. The ratios are around 20% higher and your engine will struggle to cope with them. Transfer boxes and axles are all the same ratios on Diesel Fourtraks but the gearboxes have different internal ratios. The petrol gearbox has the same ratios as the non turbo diesel but I haven't tried one in a diesel so don't know about the input shaft being different.
My Fourtrak is a '90 model but has been running a '95 TDI engine through the '90 non turbo box and a '93 TD manual transfer case and '92 petrol axles with 33" tyres, gearing was about the same as standard despite the big tyres.
Best regards

The input shaft bit I knoe is
The input shaft bit I knoe is diffrent from experience. I put a Diesel into an F80 once. Took me ages to figure out why it just would not bolt up to the bellhousing properly. Same splines. And only a small difftence in length.
