Please can somebody HELP me!
Does anyone else have a Terios that over heats in this hot weather, or rather it doesn't! I am driving along and all of a sudden with NO prior warning the engine cuts out, and I come to an uncontrolled stop. The temperature gauge is normal as is everything else. The car has been into two different gargages on several occassions over the last few summers and none of them can find out what the problem is. I am now getting to a point where I'm too nervous to go out in it in hot weather and slow moving traffic for fear of what might occur
sounds like fuel is vapour
sounds like fuel is vapour locking in hot weather or warm under the bonnet (when in traffic)
Whe you go to fill up is there a lot of prssure in the fuel tank when you take the filler cap off?
cheers
Rob
First thought
Thanks Rob, but that was the garage's first thought and so they told me to open the petrol cap to release the pressure whenever the engine cut out, which worked and now they've replaced the original petrol cap with a breathable one.
If it cuts out and later
If it cuts out and later restarts, it is either electrical or fuel.
Next time it cuts out remove a spark plug lead and check for a spark. [I assume you know how]. If there is no spark then the heat is breaking connection somewhere along the cable - possibly the HT connection to the distributor or the coil breaking down when overheated. Try a scrap yard fo a replacement coil or buy new.
Electrical.
There is also a very good chance that the distributor cap has a hairline crack and heat widens the crack so the HT is lost to the air. I had a car with the same problem and it took me ages to realise the problem. I would replace the distributor cap. Whilst doing so also replace the rotor arm.
Fuel.
Usually it is a vacuum in the fuel supply. However I read you have vented the fuel cap. Did the garage remove and clean the fuel filter which is in the fuel line by the fuel pump?
Restarts straight away
Thanks, Mace - you're a Star!
It does restart straight away - runs for about 2-3 miles then stops again. Both garages cleaned the fuel filter.
I will pass on the info about the distributor cap and rota arm for which I am very grateful - thank you again.
