Forum:
Checking our faithful friend over today and spotted a small oil stain on the back of the offside rear drum back plate. Removing the drum, the shoes were oil contaminated so I guess the oil seal between axle housing and half shaft is worn and axle oil is leaking past.
I am a reasonably capable amateur, is this a straightforward job or does it require specialised skills and equipment?
Are you sure it is oil and
Are you sure it is oil and not brake fluid from a leaking cylinder? changing the seal is an easy job to do.
hmm
that's what I was thinking

That was my first thought, but the brake cylinder is dry and the oil has that distinctive Hypoid smell.

I had the same thing in my Sportrak, the rear drum was really badly oiled. When I took all the brake bits out you could wobble the shaft up and down, the seal and the bearing had gone!
When I priced the parts up from Daihatsu it worked out easier and cheaper just to change the whole axle for one from a mate who was scrapping a Sportrak
cheers

take out the
shaft and see which seals have gone, take the brake assembly out, then undo the bolts and you'll pull it away to reveal a problem.

I have a manual on CD for the earlier models but not the F78 but presumably they are similar in this respect. You make it sound simple, the manual refers to all sorts of special tools, pullers etc. Do I not need anything specialised?
