cutting out

Forum:

have a 1990 rocky drives well but cuts out every now and then not fuel as has half tank looks like no fuel in filter blowing back down fuel line in to tank seems to sort problem out for a while does it more after been over rough lane

filth

sounds like dirt or something swimming in the tank if blowing it back works, its sucking up something it shouldn't, it might be an idea to take out the fuel tank,or at least drain it, take of the sender unit cover and have a good look/clean, its not overly difficult but if its a bit of rustbucket some of the bolts will most likely shear off, but that's what drills are for. ....

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Drain the tank at the drain

Drain the tank at the drain bung and clean out the tank as it is not uncommon for a couple of inches of dirt to accumulate.

Remove the sender unit and check the pick up pipe for corrosion and perforations, and the botton strainer for integrity. If the strainer is damaged it is sucked over the end of the pick up pipe and blocks it, it could also be blocked with debris.
Check the pick up pipe for corrosion and perforations, this is common and as the fuel level drops below the perforated section it will pick up just air and not fuel.

Check the tank breather, follow the rubber pipe to the breather unit. Run the engine until it stops, quickly get out and remove the filler cap, if there is a sudden inrush of air the breather is blocked.
Remove the breather unit, it is basically a ball held in a central position with a spring either side. As the fuel is used the tank vacuum forces the ball one way to let in air, if the tank heats in the sun and expands, it lets pressure out.

Clean thoroughly with penetrating oil as they corrode and accumulate considerable dirt in them, suck and blow until it is free and operates both ways. Lubricate with a little engine oil to stop corrosion. If it cannot be freed then replace it with a small inline fuel filter.
