Auto Hubs can't decide whether to engage

Forum:

Hi
Just drove home tonight and heard a clicking noise from the front drivers side wheel. It sounded like the auto hub was trying to engage the driveshaft. I have had the hub cover off and there is plenty of grease in the hub. I engaged 4 high and low and it doesn't make the noise. Its only in 2 high.
Any ideas?? Is it something to do with the vacuum valve thing that engages 4wd? I have found a split pipe off the tiny breather out of the top of the gearbox but I have cut the split part off and reconnected the pipe.
Previous to today it was running fine. Its a 1994 2.8 TDX Independant. with 96,000 miles on the clock.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Look in the "How It Works"

Look in the "How It Works" section, i have written a section them and how they work.

There is also a section on maintaining them so they do not give the common problems they do. Most of the problems are caused by a lack of maintenance, sounds like yours are also.

Simple to maintain and once done and periodically repeated it should not occur again.

I've stripped the offending

I've stripped the offending hub down. The brake shoe(the bit that fits inside the hub with a wire c clip) has broken up which has inturn damaged the gold outer cam. Can you still get them bits and the circlips? Did they do a repair kit?
I guess this was caused by bad fitment.
