f70 running hot with new turbo engine

Forum:

Installed a 1994 f73 Independent into my old 1987 F70 and my temperature usually sits around the middle of the guage or slightly above if a warm day or putting my foot down. just driven home and the guage was right on the border between cold and hot which is right up there, even going slightly into the hot.
only thing I have left is to connect the duct up that draws air in and runs across the top of the rad, so I knw the airbox is drawing hot air from the fan.

Does anyone know if these engines run hotter due to the turbo? is tis normal on this type of conversion?

Please search site

there is tons of info on this forum about temperature issues, it can be the viscous fan, thermostat, water pump, air in rad hoses, blocked rad, etc etc

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

One thing to try is to switch

One thing to try is to switch the temperature sender from the old engine and fit it to the new one. They work on resistance, and there were two types fitted.

Check the obvious, is the heater set to the hot position, if is is not then the heater will not fill and create an air lock. Then its things like thermostats, etc.

will check toady although

the donour turbo fourtrak drove all the way from southampton to south wales with no problems.
The original fourtrak did vary in temperature as stated on hot or cold days and if you put your foot down.

installed the original radiator and cowl instead of the turbo one as it didn't match up and semed to fowl the fan, so maybe the rad is the cause, will try with turbo rad and old cowl or no cowl if after installing the turbo temp sensor and air intake.
As for airlocks, I ran all the way back with the heater on hot and that worked fine. So a day of testing is ahead me thinks.
One last thing I'm sure the viscous fan is in GWO as that was moving a seriou ammount of air last night when I checked and stopped on the button.

Ahhhhh problem found.....possibly. ...

There is size differences in the two vehicles radiators, why, dunno but the f73/78 rad won't fit f70/75 without modification, they made them larger/different bolt holes on the independent, this I would say is the cause possibly, these engines Doo get hot this time of year, its even stated in the handbook!! I don't think you can even get hold of the f70/75 radiators any more, not of the shelf anyway.

Ok one of the causes to start with

is that damn viscous fan! it was the original one that worked. took it for a hard run to get it hot today after putting the air intake back on and it got really hot again, pulled over popped the bonnet and killed the engine. The fan continued to spin for at least 3 seconds maybe more plus I was ables to turn freely with one hand.
Tomorrow I will be swapping over the fans and radiators. May have to run without a cowl for the fan to spin, anyne know if this is ok to do?
