Forum:
since buying a daihatsu fourtrak ive got an interest in doing a bit of diy mechanics even did my own clutch on me fiat last week took me 7 days but hay saved a bit.
im trying to get a good tool box together i bought cheap to begin with and some snapped during using them and were generally rubbish to work with ive sold all that now via ebay.
so far ive bought 2 old snap on ratchets 1/4 and 3/8 and a halfords professional 3/8 socket set and a bluepoint 1/4 inch set oh and a halfords pro screwdriver set all second hand.
im thinking next of a britool 1/2 inch drive ratchet and kamasa 1/2 inch socket set these i think are mid range are they any good.
what do you think so far am i right are there any other must have tools i should add to my collection .
whats your favorite tool.
Bad workman blame there toollssss
You can buy really expensive stuff but you still need to know how to use it....id avoid draper brand and any/all of this cheap power craft type stuff, it doesn't last, I've always got on with bosch, sealey, snap on, sometimes its worth buying power tools n bits from car boot sales, I really don't think they put a lot of effort into making really quality tools any more along the lines of black n decker n stuff, your just paying for a name, I reckon tons of brands come out the same factory. ...
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

ive got a set of kamasa
ive got a set of kamasa metric spanners that ive had for 30 years, same with a hilka socket set theyve seen some abuse... i used to work on agricultural machinary.... now i tend to buy from boot sales ebay and even the diy shed bargain ranges usually a crap tool is obvious from looking at it. i dont beleive in paying mega bucks for hand tools that are liable to get mislaid or even nicked... the probable exception is cross head screwdrivers cheap ones soon damage screw heads.
power tools are a different kettle of fish... i use ebay and boot sales to find quality used stuff... metabo , hitachi , bosch , makita ryobi all do good stuff. if it was less than fifty quid new its probably crap is a good rule of thumb for power tools.....
Investing in good tools, invest in good security!
Older Britool tools are very good quality and I still regularly use 30+ year old spanners and sockets. Some of the newer stuff from them just doesn't appear to be as well made. Whether it's since they merged with Facom/Stanley I don't know but to my mind the quality has gone down (but that's my opinion and maybe I'm wrong).
I'm often wary of buying tools from car boot sales or market stalls/stalls at country shows. Knowing people who've had sentimental tools stolen I'd never buy anything which I had the slightest suspicion about. Having said that there are plenty of genuine people about and good bargains to be had. I think it's a case of using your common sense, ask akward questions about the tools they have for sale, does the same person turn up week after week selling old valuable tools (such as britool/snap-on) and appear to be more of a market seller than a mechanic, where are they getting such a supply of tools from?
Also if your investing in good tools, invest in good security as well.
tools
Draper/sealey , same! Black & Decker got worse and worse and worse and worse over the years - now they knowck out most of the diy stores own,B7Q.Wickes etc - ALL RUBBISH.
Bosch gone downhill soemthing terrible the last three to four year.
Kamasan good. Halfords PRO range good. Britool excellent.
Snapon v good but at a price!
Power tools - Malita very good and you can't go wrong with Dewalt if you can afford them!!!

Cheap then replace?
What i've done is buy a cheap tool kit/chest, then as things break overtime (some faster than others) I'm replacing them with alot better brands (snapon etc) so hopefully spreading the cost a it more over time.
not nessecarily the way id like to do it, but working at the moment
Britool are premuim tools and
Britool are premuim tools and should last a lifetime if properly looked after, Kamasa are good tools but they do a DIY range and an industrial range. Go for the industrial range as again they will last a lifetime.
Stanley are doing some good deals on socket sets and spanners, and some own brand professional ranges are good value and quality. Look in Machine Mart, and places such as Cromwell tools, Cromwell do a Kennedy brand which is their own brand, but good quality professional ranges.
