Hi all, i was just having a look under the fourtrak (F78) and noticed a oily leak coming from a pipe which is very corroded, it appears to come out of the rear cross chassis tube and into the rear axle, well my question is, what is it? whats it for and do i need it? any suggestions appreciated. It is the axle breather, and it is needed; these allow the axle to breathe without letting in dirt or water.
If you remove it, it will just allow dirt and water into the axle and trash it, one option is to re-route it. One favourite place is alongside the bodywork next to the fuel tank breather.
This is well out of the way and reasonably protected.

If you relocate it, i would advise you fit a cheap disposable fuel filter on the end, this will stop most things getting in.
Fit it to the breather pipe, cap the other end with a rubber bung and drill or poke a 1mm hole in the rubber bung.
