stuck newbie

Forum:

hi everybody! i've owned my '00 yrv turbo for 10 days and the beginning hasn't been a happy one unfortunately. the problem is that the car is stuck in 1st gear only. when engaging reverse or drive the gear goes in hard not gently like usual and also the speedo isn't working. it doesn't go to steer shift and when trying to change gears from the steering the D light flashes once.

the only things that i've done on the car which may be somehow related are a new stereo(burnt a fuse in the process but replaced it)and hooked up a boost gauge. until i realised there was a burnt fuse the check engine light came on. then swapped the burnt one with a temporary one and after around 15-20 mins idling i noticed the D4 light was flashing but turned off the engine and it went out. done it a couple of times but always while idling and always went off when car is switched off.

please help asap.

Hello and welcome. Do a

Hello and welcome. Do a search on here for "D4 Flashing" and have a read. Been happening to me lately, 3 times. Happens when starting and you get down the road and realise its stuck in 1st with the D4 light flashing. After restarting it is fine. Whilst the light is flashing it really bangs into gear when selecting 1st/reverse. One member said it was due to insufficient voltage to the gearbox ECU and once the battery was replaced the problem vanished. I check my battery voltage every day and will do until D4 flashes just to see if it the voltage IS low. Today it was 12v, 14v running and 9.5-10.5 during cranking. Another member found that his negative terminal was loose and once tightened up the problem went away. As for the speedo, I'm sure they are electronic as when i reconnected my battery, the needle rose to 70 mph and back to zero and then all the gauges registered normally. Try disconnecting the battery for 5 mins and then re connecting it see what happens. Maybe you upset something when swapping fuses etc?
Am I correct in assuming the car is PERMANENTLY stuck in first all the time now? I have also recently fitted a boost gauge and prior to this the car was fine but I really don't think the two are related.
Do a search on here, there's a fair bit mentioned about this scenario.

after i connected the stereo

after i connected the stereo the dials went crazy. when i turn the ignition on but still not started the engine, first the fuel gauge and temp gauge go to max then settle down to their proper reading an then the tacho goes to 4.5k revs and the speedo upto 70 or 80km/h then settle to proper reading.

yes it stayed stuck in 1st gear but the D4 didn't flash when it made this thing. it just flashed while idling but stayed on while driving and only flashed once only when i try to shift from the steering.

mmmm, the dial thing is

mmmm, the dial thing is normal imo, as mine did exactly the same thing after reconnecting the battery and then turning on the ignition. I think the only way to find out for sure is to get a dealer to check for any fault codes. I've been told that the gearbox has a separate ECU and that one or two members reported no fault codes were logged in the main ECU after the D4 light had flashed. How many miles etc has your car covered?

That should not happen...

It sounds very much that it is an electrical issue.
Perhaps it would be worth it to remove the radio and all the wiring that was done with it. Check what happens. The YRV Turbo is quite sensitive to electrical faults as mentioned in many threads.
Is it possible you shorted or are bridging the permanent (+) power and/or the ignition (+) wire when connecting the radio?
Did you happen to connect the power-antenna wire to anything it shouldn't be connected to?
Also, do you have any alarm or immobiliser connected or disconnected?
I'm pretty sure DaihatsuDave will read this and give a better answer, he is the electronics guy...

the stereo is working fine.

the stereo is working fine. it's keeping the memory now although i don't know how this happened coz the day before everytime i switched off the car it lost the memory.the car worked ok with the stereo installed. it only went nuts when connected the front speakers (and burnt a fuse in the process) and connected the light for boost gauge.

fuses are all ok i've just double checked them. both problems are still there: speedo doesn't work and still stuck in 1st.

checked also the battery connections. found that the +ve was a bit loose but tightened it and everything that goes with the battery but still nothing.

anything else guys??
