Forum:
Please can someone help cos this is driving me daft!!
I have a 1996 Fourtrak TDX with the 2.8 turbo diesel engine.
It starts fine but is cutting out with complete loss of power every few hundred yards. I read the forum and thought that there may be dirt in the tank, or the fuel pipes which had been changed to rubber at some stage were letting air in.
I've flushed the tank out and replaced all of the pipes front to back. Then I bled the system and the pump on the fuel filter pumped the fuel through great and I went for a drive. The car ran great for the first 1/2 mile then it started doing exactly the same.
After being driven and then slackening the bleed nipple on the top of the fuel filter and push the pump on the top, it doesnt seem to be pulling the fuel through? There's some wiring to the pump/fuel filter and I am wondering if that is the cause and what the wiring actually does?
I'm now scratching my head so would really appreciate some help if anyone has come across this before. I'm not great with electrics and I'm wondering if theres a selenoid or switch that could be playing up?
If not, i'll have to book it in with a specialist and I live in West Yorkshire near Leeds if anyone has any recommendations.
Thanks

Check the obvious first, if
Check the obvious first, if it is not pulling fuel through it can only be a few things. You have replaced the pipes, so these should be fine.
Fill the tank with fuel to the top, if this cures it, it is a perforated fuel pick up pipe in the fuel tank. You need to check that it is not getting fuel, and it is not getting a mixture of fuel and air.
If it is not getting fuel it is then tank related, so check the following. Remove the filler cap and run without it on. If this cures it then it is the tank breather which is blocked. Follow the thin bleed pipe from the fuel tank to locate the filter. Remove this as it will be clogged or siezed, it is simply a small ball centralised between two springs. Clean and lubricate with penetrating oil to free, then oil with engine oil. If it will not free replace with a cheap disposable fuel filter.
Remove the sender unit from the tank, look and see if there us sludge or rubbish in the tank, if there is then drain and clean. Strain the diesel through an old pair of tights.
Check the filter on the end of the pick up pipe, this may be blocked or broken. If it is blocked then clean, if it is broken it may act as a flap valve and block the end of the pick up pipe when fuel is sucked up.
