YRV poor performance

Forum:

I recently bought a YRV and find the performance rather leisurely at best, I have fitted new sparks plugs but the performance is nowhere near the figures quoted on paper and the fuel consumption is on the high side, there is also a lot of black smoke out of the exhaust under acceleration. Anyone got any thoughts on this?
Thanks

Poor performance

On the way to changing the plugs you will have seen the air filter. If it looked dirty, try running without it for a short time and change it if that improves the situation, although this is a suggestion more suited to the carburettor days

The mixture sounds very rich and this is controlled by sensors, one of which is attached to the airbox to measure airflow. If that's not connected or faulty it will provide the wrong info to the ECU and the mixture will not be correct.

If the oxygen sensor on the exhaust pipe is not connected or is faulty that will also provide the wrong info to the ECU and the mixture will not be correct.

My guess in this case would be a faulty oxygen sensor.

I've never had such problems so haven't any experience of checking whether these two sensors are OK.

Whoever you bought the car from knew about the problem and doesn't look good. If you bought the car from a dealer he has a responsibility and should sort it out.

Same as above. Is it the 1.0

Same as above. Is it the 1.0 or the 1.3 you have? The 1.3 is certainly not leisurely if running correctly! Not sure what the 1.0 is like. What's the mileage?

Sorry forgot to say, its also

Sorry forgot to say, its also had a new lambda sensor, air filter and exhaust, currently 62000 miles, its definately 1.3.

I would be getting it checked

I would be getting it checked out. As Tony said its likely to be a faulty sensor or something casing the fuelling to be out. The items that I would suggest like plugs/air filter etc have been done.

Just checked plugs and they

Just checked plugs and they are sooty, I cant see the air flow meter though, theres 2 sensors attached to the outside of the airbox on the right hand side and 1 sensor with a plastic probe protuding into the rear right corner(viewed from front of car)but this doesn't look like a flow meter to me. Also does the YRV have a timing belt or chain as I have heard differing opinions.
Thanks

The 1.3 K3-VE engine you have

The 1.3 K3-VE engine you have has a timing chain, not a belt. These should last the life of the engine providing regular oil changes are carried out.

If your plugs are sooty then it is running rich which would tie up with the black smoke from your exhaust.

I thought the probe in the plastic cone that sits in the airflow was the MAF sensor, I maybe wrong of course. I am not sure what the two sensors are on the right of the airbox. The one nearest the car has 2 vacuum? pipes going to it. If I still had my YRV Premium I could find out but the turbo I have now is different altogether..............

Wayne

On the std 1.3 the round sensor on the airbox is the airflow, the square is a pressure sensor.
The Turbo airflow sensor is on the intercooler and the 1.0ltr has it on the inlet manifold.

Thanks for all the help so

Thanks for all the help so far, but can someone please confirm the maf sensor is the push fit one that sits in the airbox and looks like a cross between a cotton bud and a cone.
The engine check light does work but is not on once its running, currently getting about 25 mpg around town and need to use 3rd gear for hills that a 1.25 fiesta used to take in 4th.
Thanks again.

Going by what Dave says

Going by what Dave says above, yes the round one i.e. cotton bud in a cone is the maf sensor. Google MAF sensor images, most look alike but in different housings.

Sounds like over fuelling

I'm with Tony and Wayne it sounds like over fuelling. Did you unplug your battery when you took on the work? Noticed you mention changing the air filter, it is the correct part and fitted correctly? Possibly you may have knocked something when fitting it?

As for the scangauge Tony mentions, the code side of it for the ECU may only show up wif the Engine Management light is showing up on your dashboard.

If the engine management

If the engine management lights not coming on maybe the bulb has either failed or been removed...an old trick by some dodgy sellers.
Pull the plug on the top lambda sensor, drive it and see if the light pops on, least then you know it works.
Examine one of your new plugs, if its running rich they will be sooted up, if running ok they will be brown.

Poor performance

Is the water temperature correct when fully warmed up? If the engine is running cold the mixture will be richer....faulty thermostat. Or maybe the engine temp sensor is faulty giving the ECU incorrect info.

Can you borrow a Scangauge to plug into your YRV's OBD11 port? This should give you an error code leading to identification of the fault. The Scangauge gives lots of good info on your engine performance and last time I looked cost about

Would I notice any difference

Would I notice any difference if I ran the car with this sensor disconnected, would the ecu switch to a default mode, but more importantly would I risk causing any damage?
Thanks
