Forum:
Since you clever individuals on here were able to sort my last problem I thought I'd ask this one.
I have a 1996 Fourtrak forester with the 2.8 Turbo diesel engine and the auto engaging hubs.
With this latest snowy weather, I have realised my 4WD is not working as the cars spun twice today. (my wife thought i did it on purpose)
When you press the 4H button on the dash, no lights come on, and I dont think the wheels are driving at the front, as it felt like the rear wheels were slipping on the snow.
I was wondering what I need to check first and what tests etc are the easiest to rule out/in what my problems are.
Also, I think my tyres are designed to do a million miles but are rubbish in the snow, and I think I need some better offroad/onroad tyres. Any ideas which is the best suppliers for new wheels tyres?
Many thanks for your help.
easiest way if youve got real
easiest way if youve got real slippy conditions is to chain the towbar to something solid then try and drive off ... the driven wheels should spin on the ice. if only the rears are spinning have a peer at the front propshaft... if its going round the transfer box is in fwd and the problem is in the front axle. if its the axle first suspect is the auto locking hubs arnt locking.... but it could be diff or halfshaft broken.
tryes...
I'm finding cooper tyres to be a fantastic alternative to the big brand expensive types such as BF e.t.c. I have the Discoverer ATR's which are the all terrains and are the equivalent of the General Grabber AT2's (which are also recommended, if more expensive). I've used them in mud, snow e.t.c. and never had a problem, although they are obviously not designed for serious off-roading, they are exactly what I need (putting on firework displays in muddy and very wet fields for example)
My brother is running the Cooper discoverer STT's on his '90 TD5 which are mud terrains and they are superb in all conditions.
Have a look here for decent prices if you can get them fitted elsewhere.

Im having the same problem...only sometimes the green light comes on but in the main the 4 wheel drive will not engage..oh and then when it has... it will not come out again!!..I think it could be a poor electrical connection on the gear box .. could that be true?.. if so what do I look for
